Ford Focus 1.6 Duratec Ti-VCT (PNDA, 105 hp) (2016): Camshaft Oil Seal Replacement
The camshaft oil seals on the 1.6 Duratec Ti-VCT engine are replaced when oil leaks appear around them, usually after 70-80 thousand km (about 45-50 thousand miles). The job requires removing the timing belt and the variable cam timing (VCT) mechanisms.

Step by step
17 steps- Disconnect the negative battery terminal and remove all spark plugs to make it easier to turn the crankshaft.
- Remove the valve cover by disconnecting the ventilation hoses and removing the cover mounting bolts.
- Remove the upper timing cover and set the No. 1 cylinder piston to TDC on the compression stroke, aligning the marks on the camshaft gears with the cylinder head housing.
- Lock the camshafts with the special tool (Ford 1.6 Ti-VCT timing locking tool) through the holes in the rear ends of the shafts to prevent them from turning.
- Loosen the timing belt tensioner and take the belt off the camshaft gears.
- While holding the camshafts from turning with a 19 mm wrench on the hexagonal sections of the shafts, remove the VCT mechanism mounting bolts (tightening torque during assembly is 80-120 N·m (59-89 lb-ft). Check the exact value in the manufacturer's service manual).
- Remove the VCT mechanisms from the camshafts.
- Pry with a flat screwdriver and carefully remove the old seals from their seats in the cylinder head.
- Inspect the new seals before installation. The sealing lips must be even, without tears, dents or rubber buildup, and the springs must be intact and not stretched.
- Use a file or fine sanding wheel to remove small chamfers on the seating edges of the seals to make pressing them in easier.
- Lubricate the sealing lips of the new seals with clean engine oil.
- Install the seals with the sealing lips facing inward into the cylinder head seats, carefully guide the lips onto the camshafts (a wooden stick can be used), and press the seals in all the way with a suitable driver.
- Install the VCT mechanisms on the camshafts and tighten the mounting bolts in two stages with a torque wrench to the specified torque (holding the shafts from turning).
- Install the timing belt on the camshaft gears and adjust the belt tension according to the service manual.
- Remove the camshaft locking tools, turn the crankshaft two full revolutions, and make sure the timing marks line up.
- Install the timing cover and the valve cover with a new gasket, and reconnect all hoses and wires.
- Reconnect the battery terminal, install the spark plugs, start the engine, and check that there is no oil leaking around the seals.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Before replacing the seals, be sure to check the condition of the crankcase ventilation system. If it is clogged or the hoses are pinched, the increased crankcase gas pressure will cause oil to leak again, even past the new seals. When installing the timing belt, make sure the marks line up exactly. A mistake will cause the valves to hit the pistons and lead to expensive repairs.
