Infiniti QX30 (1st generation): Changing the Oil in the 7DCT Dual-Clutch Transmission

The QX30 with the 2.0 engine (211 hp) has a 7-speed dual-clutch automated transmission with two dry clutches. The oil in it lubricates only the gears and mechanical parts. The clutches are dry, so you must use only the approved fluid and set the level at a specific temperature. I could not find the exact capacity, temperature window or torque values for this transmission in publicly available service materials. Below is the general procedure. Check the numbers against the manufacturer's specifications.

Difficulty: Hard Time: 1.5-3 hours Steps: 12 Tools: lift or pit, jack with jack stands, wrench or hex bit for the drain and fill plugs (check the size on the car), torque wrench, fluid fill syringe or pump with hose, drain pan of at least 3 L (3.2 qt), container for measuring the drained volume, new sealing washers, gloves, rags, scan tool for monitoring transmission fluid temperature

Part

  • 🔩 Transmission fluid for the dry dual-clutch 7-speed transmission (7DCT, Daimler design). The specification and capacity are listed in the service booklet and on the information label. New sealing rings or washers for the drain and fill plugs. The transmission fluid filter is usually not replaced separately on this model

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Warm up the transmission with a short drive so the oil thins out and drains better. Do not let it get very hot, to avoid burns.
  2. Park the car perfectly level on a lift or on jack stands. Remove the underbody shield if it blocks access to the transmission.
  3. Find the fill (check) plug on the transmission case and the drain plug at the bottom. Before draining, make sure the fill plug can be removed. If it will not come out, do not drain the oil, because you will not be able to add new fluid.
  4. Place the pan under the transmission and remove the drain plug. Let the oil drain completely. Write down or measure the drained volume so you can refill the same amount.
  5. Inspect the oil and the magnet on the plug, if there is one. Fine gray dust is acceptable. Large shavings or metal particles mean the transmission needs diagnosis, not just an oil change.
  6. Install the drain plug with a new washer and tighten it with a torque wrench. Use the torque from the specification. Plugs on housings like this are usually tightened within 20-40 N·m (15-30 lb-ft). Do not tighten by feel, because the case is aluminum.
  7. Add the new fluid through the fill hole with a syringe or pump. Add the same amount you drained, or until it starts to seep out of the hole.
  8. Start the engine and warm the transmission to the oil temperature given in the specification. Monitor it with the scan tool. Move the selector through all positions, pausing a few seconds in each.
  9. Set the level. Stop the car on level ground at operating temperature. With the engine running (if the specification requires it), open the check plug. The excess should run out in a thin stream, then stop dripping.
  10. Install the fill plug with a new washer and tighten it to the torque in the specification. Wipe down the case and reinstall the shield.
  11. Take a test drive of 10-15 minutes. Check for leaks at the plugs, jerking when pulling away, and shifting problems.
  12. If your QX30 is the all-wheel-drive version, remember that the transfer unit and rear axle differential have their own separate oil, which is not changed along with the transmission oil.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • This is a dry dual-clutch transmission. Adding fluid with the wrong specification or overfilling it causes jerking, clutch slip and expensive mechatronic unit repairs. If you are not sure about the oil temperature or the level, it is better to leave the job to a repair shop. Resetting the adaptations after the change is done with a diagnostic scan tool. If jerking when pulling away appears after the change, take the car to a repair shop with a scan tool.
