Kia Soul 1.6 MPI (2016): Manual Transmission Fluid Change
Changing the fluid in the 6-speed M6CF1 manual transmission on a Soul with the 1.6 MPI engine is done every 100,000-120,000 km under severe driving conditions (manufacturer's schedule). The job is simple, but you need a lift or an inspection pit to reach the underside.
Part
- 🔩 Manual transmission fluid SAE 70W or 75W-85, API GL-4 (OEM Kia/Hyundai or equivalents such as Red Line MT-85, ZIC G-FF 75W-85). Capacity 1.6-2.0 L (1.7-2.1 qt). Manual transmission drain plug gasket

Step by step
11 steps- Warm up the transmission by driving for 5-10 minutes so the fluid flows easily and carries out the deposits.
- Raise the front of the car on a lift or drive it over an inspection pit. Secure it with the parking brake.
- From underneath, locate the transmission housing (on the driver's side in left-hand-drive markets, i.e., the left side in the direction of travel). The drain plug is closer to the inner CV joint; the fill plug is higher and closer to the front bumper.
- Loosen the fill plug (the upper one) with a 24 mm wrench, but do not remove it completely. This is the fluid level check hole.
- Place the drain pan under the transmission and remove the drain plug (the lower one). Let the fluid drain for 10-15 minutes.
- Inspect the drain plug. If it has a magnet, wipe off any metal particles (a small amount is normal).
- Replace the copper or aluminum gasket on the drain plug and install the plug. Tightening torque is 35-45 N·m (26-33 lb-ft) (check the exact value in the manufacturer's specifications for the M6CF1).
- Fill with fluid through the fill hole. Use a flexible funnel with a hose or a hand pump, since space is limited. Keep filling until fluid starts to run out of the fill hole. That is the correct level. Total capacity is 1.6-1.8 L (1.7-1.9 qt) for the 1.6 MPI.
- Install the fill plug with a new gasket. Tightening torque is 35-45 N·m (26-33 lb-ft).
- Lower the car, start the engine, and shift through all the gears (holding each for 2-3 seconds) so the fluid is distributed.
- Recheck the level after the engine has idled for 5 minutes. Loosen the fill plug. At the correct level, a small amount of fluid should seep out.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Use only GL-4 fluids, NOT GL-5. GL-5 fluids contain sulfur-phosphorus additives that damage the synchronizers in a manual transmission with copper (yellow metal) parts. Using the wrong fluid causes hard shifting and premature transmission wear.
