Lada Niva Travel (1st generation): Manual Transmission Oil Change
The Niva Travel with the 1.7 engine has a 5-speed manual transmission. Change its oil according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. If the vehicle operates under severe conditions (off-road, towing a trailer, water crossings), change the oil more often. The job is simple, but it is important to warm up the oil and set the level exactly at the lower edge of the fill hole.
Part
- 🔩 75W-90 transmission oil, API GL-4 grade (GL-4/GL-5 if needed), about 1.6 L (1.7 qt) for the 5-speed manual transmission. Also sealing washers or rings for the plugs, if your vehicle has them (inexpensive)
Step by step
12 steps- Drive for 5-10 minutes to warm up the oil. Hot oil drains better and carries suspended particles out with it. Do not start draining on a scorching-hot transmission, to avoid burns.
- Park the vehicle on a level surface over the pit or on ramps. Apply the parking brake and place wheel chocks under the wheels. Leave the shifter in neutral.
- If there is a skid plate or underbody shield, remove it. Locate two plugs on the transmission housing: the fill plug (on the side) and the drain plug (at the bottom of the case). Do not confuse them with the plugs of the transfer case, which sits separately: it has its own oil and its own plugs.
- Wipe the area around the plugs. Loosen the fill plug first. If you cannot get it loose, it is better not to touch the drain plug, because you will not be able to add new oil.
- Position the drain pan and remove the drain plug. Let the oil drain completely, which takes 10-15 minutes.
- Inspect the plug. A light film of fine metal dust on the magnetic tip is acceptable. Large shavings or pieces of metal indicate transmission wear, and the transmission then needs diagnosis.
- Clean the plug and replace the sealing ring, if it has one. Install the drain plug and tighten it with moderate force, without jerking. For the exact torque, follow the manufacturer's specification, and do not strip the threads in the aluminum case.
- Add fresh oil through the fill hole with a syringe or pump. Fill slowly until oil starts to flow out of the hole or reaches its lower edge.
- Wait 3-5 minutes for the oil to settle, then check the level again. It should be level with the lower edge of the fill hole. Top up if needed.
- Install the fill plug with the same care and wipe any oil residue off the transmission.
- Reinstall the skid plate, lower the vehicle, and drive 5-10 km, shifting through all gears. Then inspect the transmission for oil leaks and retighten the plugs if necessary.
- Take the used oil to a recycling collection point.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not fill oil above the level of the fill hole: it will be forced out through the seals and the breather. Do not use engine oil or ATF instead of transmission oil, as this will speed up synchronizer wear. If you notice shavings, a thick metallic sludge, or a strong burnt smell during draining, do not keep driving the vehicle and take it to a repair shop.
