Lada Niva Travel 1.7 8V (2024): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
The 1.7 8V engine (VAZ-21214, fuel-injected) needs an oil change about every 15,000 km or once a year. In severe conditions (off-roading, frequent short trips, heavy traffic), change it more often, every 7,000-10,000 km. Change the oil on a warm engine together with the oil filter. The fill capacity is about 3.5 L (3.7 qt); check the exact level with the dipstick.
Part
- 🔩 Engine oil, about 3.5 L (3.7 qt) for a fill with a filter change, plus 0.5-1 L (0.5-1.1 qt) in reserve for topping off. Semi-synthetic or synthetic oil in 5W-30 / 5W-40 viscosity is suitable (5W-30 is better if you often start the engine cold), meeting API SL or higher, or ACEA A3/B3 or higher. Oil filter with the same thread as the classic Niva and VAZ 2121, for example from Mann, Filtron, or Sakura, or the factory Lada filter. Drain plug sealing washer (copper or aluminum)
Step by step
13 steps- Warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes to operating temperature so the oil thins out and drains better. The oil and parts will be hot, so work carefully.
- Park the car level on a ramp, in a pit, or on a lift, shut off the engine, and set the parking brake. If you raise the car with a jack, always support it with jack stands.
- If the car has a steel skid plate under the engine, remove it or open up access to the drain plug and filter. It is usually held on by several bolts.
- Unscrew the oil filler cap on the engine. This lets the oil drain faster and without "glugging."
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan and unscrew the drain plug on the oil pan with a 17 mm wrench. Let the oil drain completely, which takes 10-15 minutes.
- While the oil drains, move the pan under the oil filter and unscrew the filter with a filter wrench. The filter will still contain oil, so keep it with the opening facing up. Inspect the drain plug and clean off any deposits and debris. Fine metallic dust on the magnet is normal; large metal chips indicate serious engine wear.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface on the engine block. Make sure the old rubber gasket has not stayed behind on the engine. This is a common mistake, and it causes oil to pour out after the new filter is installed.
- Fill the new filter about two-thirds full with fresh oil. Lubricate its rubber gasket with a thin layer of oil and screw it on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten it another 3/4 to 1 turn. Do not tighten it with a tool.
- Install the drain plug with a new sealing washer and tighten it firmly but without excessive force (an aluminum oil pan can be stripped). As a guideline, the torque is 25-35 N·m (18-26 lb-ft); confirm the exact value in the manufacturer's specifications.
- Pour in about 3 L (3.2 qt) of oil through the funnel, wait a couple of minutes, and check the level with the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts up to the MAX mark (the difference between MIN and MAX is about 1 L (1.1 qt)). Do not overfill above MAX.
- Close the oil filler cap. Start the engine for 30-60 seconds; the oil pressure warning light should go out within a few seconds after startup. Shut off the engine.
- Check the filter and drain plug for leaks. After 5 minutes, check the level with the dipstick again and top off if necessary. Reinstall the skid plate.
- Dispose of the used oil and filter at a collection point (many gas stations and repair shops accept them for free). Reset the maintenance reminder or make a note of the mileage at which you changed the oil.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not mix different types of oil without a need. Do not use oil with a viscosity lower than 5W-30 or higher than 10W-40 without a reason. Do not overtighten the filter or the drain plug. If the oil pressure light does not go out after the change, shut off the engine immediately and do not drive the car until the cause is found. Check the capacity and oil approvals against the service book for your specific vehicle.
