Lexus RX 2.7 (1AR-FE, 188 hp) (2011): Spark Plug Replacement
On the 1AR-FE (2.7 L), the four spark plugs sit vertically under the plastic engine cover. Replacement is a scheduled maintenance item every 90,000 km. The procedure does not require removing the intake manifold, but access to the rear plugs is limited, so work carefully.
Part
- 🔩 Toyota/Denso 90919-01247 or 90919-01233 (iridium, gap 1.1 mm, factory pre-set). Alternatives: Denso SK20R11, NGK ILFR6A11. Quantity: 4 pcs (one set)

Step by step
11 steps- Open the hood and let the engine cool down (at least 30 minutes after shutting it off).
- Remove the plastic decorative engine cover (held by 4-6 clips around the perimeter, pull it straight up).
- Disconnect the connectors from the four ignition coils (press the locking tab and pull toward you).
- Remove the mounting bolt of each ignition coil (10 mm socket), then pull the coils straight up and out.
- Blow out the spark plug wells with compressed air or wipe them with a rag so that no dirt falls into the cylinder.
- Using the 16 mm spark plug socket, unscrew each plug counterclockwise (turn the first half-turn smoothly, without jerking).
- Inspect the old plugs: the normal insulator color is light brown; black carbon deposits or oil indicate engine problems.
- Check the new plugs for the factory gap of 1.1 mm (do not adjust it, since the iridium electrode is easily damaged).
- Thread the new plugs in by hand until snug (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten with a torque wrench to 25 N·m (18 lb-ft).
- Install the ignition coils into the wells, tighten the mounting bolts (10-12 N·m (7-9 lb-ft)), and connect the connectors until they click.
- Install the decorative engine cover, start the engine, and check that it runs smoothly at idle.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not apply copper grease or anti-seize compound to the spark plug threads. It alters the torque calibration and can lead to over- or under-tightening. The plugs come with a factory thread coating. Do not adjust the gap on iridium plugs, since the thin electrode is easily broken. If dirt gets into a well, do not blow it out with air while a plug is installed (the dirt will enter the combustion chamber). Blow out the empty well first, before installing the plug.
