Toyota Alphard: Front Brake Pad Replacement
The front brake pads on the Toyota Alphard should be replaced every 30,000-40,000 km or when the remaining pad thickness is less than 2 mm. The procedure is standard for most Toyota models: remove the caliper, replace the pads, reassemble. Always replace the pads in pairs on both wheels of the front axle for even braking.
Part
- 🔩 Front brake pads Toyota 04465-28510 or 04465-28520 (OE). Aftermarket equivalents: Advics SN315, NiBK PN1480
Step by step
14 steps- Park the vehicle on a level surface, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel, raise the vehicle with the jack, and remove the wheel.
- Inspect the brake disc for wear, deep grooves, or warping (replace it if necessary).
- Using the 17 mm socket, remove the upper caliper guide bolt and swing the caliper upward on the lower guide pin.
- Remove the old pads from the caliper bracket and check the condition of the anti-squeal shims.
- Use a C-clamp or brake piston tool to push the caliper piston fully back (watch the brake fluid level in the reservoir and, if necessary, draw off the excess with a syringe).
- Clean the pad seats in the bracket with a wire brush and apply copper grease to the caliper slide pins.
- Install the new pads in the bracket (outer and inner), making sure the anti-squeal shims are oriented correctly.
- Lower the caliper onto the pads and tighten the guide bolt to 34-35 N·m (25 lb-ft).
- Install the wheel, tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to 103 N·m (76 lb-ft), and lower the vehicle.
- Repeat the procedure on the other front wheel.
- Press the brake pedal firmly to the floor several times to seat the pads and restore pressure in the system.
- Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir and top it up to the MAX mark if necessary.
- Perform a test stop at low speed in a safe area.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Avoid hard braking for the first 200-300 km (125-185 miles) so the new pads can bed in to the discs. Do not let grease get on the friction surface of the pads or discs. If squealing or vibration appears when braking after the replacement, check that the anti-squeal shims are installed correctly and check the condition of the discs. If the discs are badly worn (deep grooves, runout), replace them at the same time as the pads.
