Toyota Alphard 3.5 V6 2GR-FE (2013): Spark Plug Replacement

The 2GR-FE engine is a V6 with two cylinder heads. The front bank of spark plugs (closer to the radiator) is easy to replace. The rear bank (next to the firewall) requires removing the intake manifold, the wiper linkage and the protective cowl panel below the windshield. The scheduled replacement interval is every 120,000 km or 10 years.

Difficulty: Hard Time: 3-4 hours (first time), 2-2.5 hours (with experience) Steps: 15 Tools: 10/12/14/16 mm socket set, extensions of various lengths, 16 mm spark plug socket, torque wrench (low range, up to 25 N·m (18 lb-ft)), thin screwdriver for connectors, shop rags, throttle body cleaner

Part

  • 🔩 Spark plugs: Denso SK20R11 or NGK 90919-01253 (iridium, 6 pcs). Intake manifold gaskets 171760P021 (3 sets, mandatory whenever the manifold is removed). Throttle body gasket (optional, if the throttle body is removed)

Step by step

15 steps
  1. Remove the decorative engine cover, then disconnect the crankcase ventilation hoses and vacuum hoses, marking their positions.
  2. Remove the air filter housing (10 mm socket) and disconnect the mass airflow sensor.
  3. Unbolt the throttle body (4 bolts, 12 mm). The coolant hoses can stay connected. Move the assembly aside.
  4. Remove the wiper arms and linkage mechanism (first mark the position of the arms).
  5. Remove the plastic cowl trim under the windshield and the metal support panel of the firewall (10 mm socket).
  6. Unbolt the intake manifold brackets (12/14 mm sockets) and move the engine wiring harness aside to gain access to the rear spark plugs.
  7. Front bank spark plugs: disconnect the ignition coil connectors, remove the coil mounting bolts (10 mm), and pull out the coils. Blow out the spark plug wells with compressed air. Remove the spark plugs with a 16 mm socket.
  8. Rear bank spark plugs: remove the ignition coils the same way, blow out the wells, and remove the spark plugs (extensions of various lengths are needed because of the tight access).
  9. Check the gap of the new spark plugs (it should be 1.0-1.1 mm). Thread the plugs in by hand until snug, then finish tightening with a torque wrench to 25 N·m (18 lb-ft). Do not use a high-torque impact wrench, as its accuracy is too poor.
  10. Install the ignition coils in reverse order and connect the connectors.
  11. Install the intake manifold with NEW gaskets (do not reuse the old ones) and tighten the brackets.
  12. Install the throttle body (the old gasket can be reused if it is intact), then connect all hoses and connectors according to your marks.
  13. Install the metal support panel, the plastic cowl trim, and the wiper linkage (align the arm position marks).
  14. Install the air filter housing and the decorative engine cover.
  15. Start the engine and check for vacuum leaks and a stable idle. Install the final panels only after this check.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Using non-OE spark plugs with an incorrect gap causes misfires and damages the ignition coils. Reusing intake manifold gaskets causes vacuum leaks and rough engine running. Before final assembly, be sure to confirm that all connectors and hoses are connected, as a V6 has a large number of them. If you have no experience working on an engine of this configuration, it is recommended to take the vehicle to a specialist repair shop.
