Toyota Hi-Ace (H200): Removing and Replacing the Left Exterior Mirror

The left mirror on the Hi-Ace H200 is mounted to the front of the driver's door and covered on the inside by a plastic trim panel. The job is simple: remove the trim panel, disconnect the connector if there is one, and remove the fasteners. Hold the mirror with your hand while you do this. The design does not depend on the engine.

  • shop rag

Step by step

9 steps
  1. Shut off the engine and open the driver's door. If the mirror is power-operated, fold it with the button if your vehicle has that function, and turn the ignition off.
  2. Apply masking tape to the edge of the door and the pillar near the mirror to avoid scratching the paint.
  3. Find the inner trim panel (a triangular cover) at the front top of the door, at the base of the mirror. Pry it off with a plastic trim tool, starting at a corner. The panel is held by clips, so pull carefully: old clips break easily.
  4. Under the trim panel you will find the mirror fasteners, usually three points. On a power mirror, the wiring runs to a connector. If the trim panel has a speaker or other components, disconnect their connector first.
  5. Press the locking tab on the mirror connector and separate the housing. Do not pull on the wires. If a wire is secured with a zip tie or clip, free it.
  6. While holding the mirror from the outside with your hand, remove the fasteners with a 10 mm socket (if the size differs, choose the socket that fits). Remove the last bolt only when the mirror is held securely.
  7. Take the mirror off the door. Check the sealing gasket where the mirror sits against the door. If it is torn, replace it, otherwise water will get into the door and you will get wind noise.
  8. Installation is the reverse of removal. First thread all the fasteners in by hand, connect the connector, then tighten the bolts. The tightening torque is low, about 5-8 N·m (44-71 lb-in): plastic and the thin metal of the door strip easily. Check the exact value in the Toyota service manual.
  9. Install the trim panel until you hear all the clips click. Turn the ignition on and check the mirror adjustment in both directions, folding, and heating (if equipped). Then adjust the mirror position for the driver.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not pull on the glass or housing during removal: the mirror has fragile internal plastic mounts
  • Do not overtighten the bolts, to avoid stripping the threads or cracking the plastic
  • After installation, make sure the mirror does not wobble while driving, otherwise your rear view will be distorted, which is unsafe
