Toyota Ipsum 2.4 (2AZ-FE, 159 hp) 2003: Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

A partial fluid change on the automatic transmission (U241E) of a second-generation Toyota Ipsum (Picnic/Avensis Verso in some markets) should be done every 30,000-60,000 km. A full change, including cleaning the pan and replacing the filter, is recommended every 60,000-80,000 km to extend the transmission's service life.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-2 hours Steps: 12 Tools: Lift or inspection pit, 10 mm and 14 mm wrenches, 10 mm socket with ratchet, 5-6 L (5.3-6.3 qt) drain pan, funnel with hose or fluid pump, rags

Part

  • 🔩 Toyota ATF Type T-IV (08886-81015 mineral or 08886-82025 synthetic). For a partial fluid change: 4 L (4.2 qt). For a full fluid change: 8.6 L (9.1 qt) for 2WD or 8.7 L (9.2 qt) for 4WD. If you are also replacing the filter, you will need: transmission filter 3533028010, pan gasket 3516821010, filter O-ring 9030132010, fill plug gasket 9043018008

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Warm the transmission to operating temperature (drive 10-15 km), then put the car on a lift or over an inspection pit.
  2. Remove the metal engine undercover (6-8 bolts, 10 mm) to get access to the transmission pan.
  3. Place a drain pan of at least 5 L (5.3 qt) under the transmission pan drain plug (14 mm bolt).
  4. Loosen the drain plug with a 14 mm wrench. The fluid may come out under pressure, so be careful. Let it drain completely (5-10 minutes).
  5. If you are doing a full change with a filter replacement: remove the 16-18 pan bolts around the perimeter (10 mm socket) and carefully lower the pan (the remaining fluid will spill out, so keep the drain pan under it). Clean metal debris off the pan and magnets with a rag.
  6. Remove the 3 transmission filter bolts (10 mm socket) and take out the old filter. Install the new filter with a new O-ring, tightening the bolts in a crisscross pattern to 8-10 N·m (6-7 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, because the filter housing is plastic.
  7. Install the pan with a new gasket (completely remove the old one and degrease the mating surfaces). Tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern to 10-12 N·m (7-9 lb-ft).
  8. Install the drain plug with a new copper washer (tightening torque 30-35 N·m (22-26 lb-ft)).
  9. Through the transmission dipstick tube, add exactly as much fluid as you drained (measure the drained volume; it is usually 3.5-4.5 L (3.7-4.8 qt) for a partial change). Use a funnel with a long hose or a special pump.
  10. Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. Move the selector through all positions in sequence (P-R-N-D-2-L), pausing 3-5 seconds in each. Return it to P.
  11. With the engine running, check the level with the dipstick. The HOT mark must be between MIN and MAX. Top up if needed in small amounts of 100-200 mL (3.4-6.8 fl oz).
  12. Reinstall the undercover and check for leaks after 50-100 km of driving.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Since 2006, Toyota has switched to ATF WS fluid for U-series automatic transmissions. However, for a 2003 Ipsum, use strictly Type T-IV (T-IV is compatible with later models, but WS is not always backward compatible with earlier transmissions). Do not mix different fluid types. Overfilling the transmission causes the fluid to foam and accelerates clutch wear, so check the level strictly with the dipstick on a warmed-up transmission. If you find a large amount of metal debris or a burnt smell when draining, the transmission needs to be diagnosed by a specialist.
