Volvo XC40 2.0 T4 B4204T38 (2021): Coolant Replacement

Replacing the coolant on a Volvo XC40 with the B4204T38 engine requires a vacuum coolant filling tool. The engine uses an electric water pump that cannot purge air from the system by itself. Without vacuum filling, the pump impeller ends up in an air pocket and cannot circulate the coolant. The cooling system capacity is about 7.5-8 L (7.9-8.5 qt).

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-1.5 hours Steps: 12 Tools: vacuum coolant filling tool, socket and wrench set, drain container of at least 8 L (8.5 qt), funnel

Part

  • 🔩 Volvo 31439720 (coolant concentrate, 1 liter). You will need 4 L (4.2 qt) of concentrate + 4 L (4.2 qt) of distilled water

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Let the engine cool for at least 2 hours after the last drive. Pressurized coolant can cause burns.
  2. Park the car on a level surface, open the hood, and remove the expansion tank cap slowly to release any residual pressure in the system.
  3. Find the drain plug (petcock) at the lower right side of the radiator. Access is tight, so you will need to find a suitable socket or wrench. Place the container underneath, open the drain plug, and wait until the radiator has drained completely.
  4. To drain the system fully, remove the lower radiator hose or open the additional drain fitting on the engine block, if present (the exact location depends on the trim and equipment, so inspect the underside of the engine). Let all the coolant drain out.
  5. Close all drain points, tighten the radiator drain plug, and reinstall the hoses. Use new clamps if the old ones are deformed.
  6. Prepare the coolant mixture. Dilute the Volvo 31439720 concentrate with distilled water at a 50/50 ratio (for example, 4 L (4.2 qt) of concentrate + 4 L (4.2 qt) of water). Do not use tap water, because its minerals will cause deposits in the system.
  7. Connect the vacuum filling tool to the expansion tank filler neck. Pull a vacuum in the system following the tool's instructions (typically 20-25 inHg, about 0.7-0.85 bar). Hold the vacuum for 5-10 minutes to check that the system is sealed.
  8. Without releasing the vacuum, put the tool's intake hose into the container with the prepared coolant mixture. Open the tool's valve. The vacuum will draw coolant into the system without creating air pockets.
  9. When the system is filled to a level between the MIN and MAX marks on the expansion tank, close the tool's valve, release the vacuum, disconnect the tool, and close the tank cap.
  10. Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature (until the cooling fans switch on). The electric pump will begin circulating the coolant. Watch the temperature on the instrument cluster and do not allow the engine to overheat.
  11. Shut off the engine and let it cool for 15-20 minutes. Check the level in the expansion tank. If it has dropped, top up the mixture to the MAX mark with the engine cold.
  12. Repeat the warm-up and level check 1-2 more times over the following week to make sure there are no air pockets or leaks.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not try to fill the cooling system by gravity through the expansion tank. The electric pump cannot purge the air, so a large air pocket will form, which leads to engine overheating and possible cylinder head damage. A vacuum cooling system filling tool is required for modern Volvos with electric water pumps. If you do not have a vacuum tool, take the car to a specialist repair shop. The scheduled coolant replacement interval for the Volvo XC40 is every 50,000 km or 4 years, whichever comes first. Do not mix different types of coolant, as this causes corrosion and damages seals.
