Anti-Theft Systems: A Mechanical Gearbox Lock
Autopapyrus

Vehicle theft is still a serious problem today. Engineers keep developing more advanced electronic anti-theft systems, but thieves aren't deterred. That's why mechanical anti-theft devices, especially mechanical gearbox locks, remain so popular.
The lock itself is a high-tech product, and only a few companies make them. Popular brands include Mul-T-Lock (Israel), Construct (Czech Republic) and Bear-Lock (Poland). The operating principle is fairly simple: the device locks the gearbox lever in reverse (on a manual transmission) or in Park (on an automatic). Locks fall into two types, pin-type and pinless, depending on the kind of locking element.
Pin-type locks (the main element is a pin) prevent you from shifting gears when engaged. Their drawback is that you have to remove the pin every time. The advantage is versatility: one lock fits most cars.
Pinless locks block gear shifting with a stopper (a bolt). The stopper locks in both the closed and open positions. The advantage of this type is that you lock and unlock it by simply turning a key. The drawback is that each lock fits only its own specific type of car.
An essential part of a mechanical anti-theft device is the high-security lock cylinder. Its job is to resist lock picks, withstand brute-force attacks, and prevent the cylinder from being drilled out. That's why this part is made from extremely hard, durable materials.
A mechanical gearbox lock is attached to the car's body, so you should leave installation to professionals. Have the lock installed only at a certified installation center. The installation is quite complex: the center console has to be taken apart and reassembled, and if this is done incorrectly, you'll end up with plenty of problems. Install a mechanical gearbox lock correctly and in the right place, and you'll have a faithful, reliable guard for many years to come.
