Citroën DS5 (1st generation): Battery Replacement
Replacing the battery on a DS5 with the 1.6 HDi diesel is simple, but the modern electrical system is sensitive to power disconnection. After the replacement, the clock and radio settings may reset, and the power windows and sunroof may need to be re-initialized. Choose a new battery of the same technology and capacity as the one that was installed before.
Part
- 🔩 12 V starter battery, standard polarity (positive on the right), 60-70 Ah capacity, dimensions within 242-278 × 175 × 190 mm. Versions with Stop&Start (for example, e-HDi 115) require an AGM or EFB battery

Step by step
12 steps- Turn off the engine, remove the key, and wait 5-10 minutes so the control modules go to sleep. Close the windows and write down the radio code if one is required.
- Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine compartment. Remove the plastic cover or housing if there is one.
- Loosen and remove the negative terminal, and move it aside, away from the body and the battery so it cannot touch metal.
- Open the protective cap on the positive terminal, then loosen and remove the positive terminal.
- Remove the battery hold-down (the bracket or clamp at the base) and, if necessary, remove the thermal cover or vent hose if one is fitted on your version.
- Lift out the old battery, keeping it strictly upright. It is heavy, about 15-20 kg (33-44 lb), so lift using your legs.
- Clean the battery tray and terminals with a brush to remove corrosion and dirt, and wipe with a dry rag if needed.
- Install the new battery with the same polarity and dimensions, and secure it firmly with the hold-down. The tightening torque is not clearly documented. Tighten it evenly until there is no play, without excessive force, so you don't damage the case.
- Connect the positive first, then the negative. Tighten the terminals moderately, just enough for a secure contact. Put back the protective cap and the cover.
- Turn the ignition on and check the instrument cluster. Start the engine and measure the voltage with a multimeter: at idle it should be about 13.8-14.5 V.
- Set the clock and radio settings again. Initialize the power windows: lower the window all the way down, then raise it all the way up and hold the button for 1-2 seconds. Check the operation of the sunroof, if equipped.
- If the car has a Stop&Start system or battery monitoring, register the new battery with a diagnostic scan tool (battery counter reset). Otherwise the system will treat the battery as old and may manage charging incorrectly.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not remove the terminals while the engine is running, and do not reverse the polarity, or you may damage the control modules. Do not let a wrench short the positive terminal to the body. Take the old battery to a recycling point and do not throw it away. If warning lights come on after the replacement or systems stop working, take the car to a repair shop with a scan tool for diagnosis and reset.
