Mazda 6 2.0 SkyActiv-G PE-VPS (2016): Battery Replacement
The battery on the Mazda 6 (GJ, third generation) is located in the engine bay on the left side and is held down by a clamp. Replacement does not require removing the underbody (engine) shield and takes about twenty minutes. The procedure is standard: disconnect the terminals (negative first, then positive), remove the old battery, and install the new one.
Part
- 🔩 12V 60 Ah battery (standard for this generation). Confirm the Mazda OE number by VIN with your supplier or in a parts catalog. Aftermarket alternatives: Bosch S4 60 Ah, Varta Blue Dynamic D24 60 Ah

9 steps- Open the hood and find the black plastic battery case to the left of the engine.

- Disconnect the POSITIVE terminal (red cable): loosen the 12 mm bolt and remove the terminal.
- Loosen the hold-down clamp bolt (10 mm) and lift the clamp up.
- Lift out the old battery with both hands (about 15 kg (33 lb)) and set it down in a safe place.
- Wipe the battery tray with a rag and remove any corrosion.
- Set the new battery in place, lower the hold-down clamp, and tighten the bolt.
- Connect the POSITIVE terminal (red cable) first: tighten the 12 mm bolt. Then connect the NEGATIVE terminal (black cable): tighten the 10 mm bolt.
- Close the hood. Press the brake pedal and make sure the brake lights come on and the instrument cluster lights up normally.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Always disconnect the negative terminal FIRST and reconnect it LAST. This prevents short circuits. If the car has Traffic Sign Recognition active, the camera may need to be recalibrated at a repair shop using diagnostic equipment.
