Step by step

8 steps
  1. Open the passenger door and look under the edge of the dashboard. To the right of the center console you will see a black plastic air duct cover.
  2. Find the filter housing cover in the cavity under the dashboard. It is held by two plastic spring clips on the sides.
  3. Carefully release both clips by pulling the cover down and toward you.
  4. Remove the old filter. It is pleated (accordion-style). Make sure it comes out completely.
  5. Wipe the filter housing (the seat) with a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove dust and leaves.
  6. Install the new filter in the same orientation (the arrow on the side must point down, toward the cabin). The filter should seat freely.
  7. Close the cover and snap both clips in place until they click.
  8. Close the passenger door. The job is done.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Make sure the new filter is a genuine Mazda part or a certified aftermarket equivalent (Mann, Filtron). A poor-quality filter lets dust through and reduces air conditioning efficiency. If a musty smell appears in the car, replace the filter earlier, 2,000-3,000 km sooner than scheduled.
