Mazda 6 2.0 SkyActiv-G PE-VPS (2016): Front Brake Rotor Replacement
On the third-generation Mazda 6 (GJ series, 2012-2018), the front rotors are ventilated and held on by 5 wheel bolts. Replace them if you hear grinding, if runout exceeds 0.5 mm, or if the edges are corroded. A new rotor is 24 mm thick, and the minimum thickness is 22 mm.
Part
- 🔩 Mazda PE0133251C (front rotor, set of 2) or equivalents from Brembo or TRW. Brake pads sold separately (if needed)

Step by step
14 steps- Park the car on a level surface, put it in first gear (or Park), and set the parking brake.
- Loosen the front wheel bolts (with the car parked on the ground, not lifted).
- Raise the front of the car with a jack under a reinforced body point (jacking point). Place jack stands on both sides. Remove the wheel.
- Remove the caliper from the front using the screwdrivers and sockets (two 17-19 mm bolts at the caliper mounting point). Carefully move the caliper aside and hang it from the suspension with wire or cord. Do not let it hang from the brake hose.
- Remove the two rotor retaining bolts (the 5 wheel bolts will already be off, but the two central bolts secure the rotor directly to the hub). Use a 17 mm socket.
- Pull the rotor straight toward you. If the rotor is stuck, tap lightly on its edge (from the inside) with a hammer, using a wooden block. Do not damage the hub.
- Clean the hub surface of rust with fine sandpaper and wipe it with a dry cloth.
- Install the new rotor, align the holes, and thread in the two retaining bolts (not fully tightened). The torque for the rotor-to-hub bolts is 40-50 N·m (30-37 lb-ft) (check the Mazda service manual for your VIN).
- Tighten them fully (make sure the rotor is centered on the hub).
- Reinstall the caliper and tighten the caliper bolts. Torque is 25-30 N·m (18-22 lb-ft) (check the service manual).
- Install the wheel and tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern. Wheel bolt torque is 95-110 N·m (70-81 lb-ft).
- Lower the car and give the wheel bolts a final tightening.
- Pump the brake pedal several times (with the car parked) until pedal pressure returns.
- Drive slowly for 1-2 km at low speed, braking gently several times. Avoid hard braking for the first 100 km, because new rotors need to be bedded in.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not mix OEM rotors (Mazda PE0133251C) with cheap universal aftermarket rotors from unknown manufacturers, because thickness and geometry vary. If the brake pads are also worn (less than 3 mm remaining), replace them too. After the replacement, check the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir (it should be between the MIN and MAX marks).
