Mazda 6 2.0 SkyActiv-G PE-VPS (2016): Low Beam Bulb Replacement
On the Mazda 6 GJ (third generation, 2012-2018), the low beams are HB4 halogen bulbs mounted in the headlight reflectors. Replacement does not require removing the headlights, and the bulbs can be reached without touching the headlight optics directly. The procedure is the same on the left and right sides.
Part
- 🔩 HB4 (9006) 12V 55W. OE number Mazda BD4V 51 0A0 or equivalents from Osram, Philips, Bosch

Step by step
10 steps- Park the car and let the headlights cool for 10-15 minutes (do not work on hot optics).
- Open the hood.
- Behind the headlight, find the round plastic connector (bulb socket). On the left headlight it is located closer to the edge of the engine bay; on the right it is slightly higher.
- Hold the socket by its housing and turn it counterclockwise about 45-60°.
- Pull the socket, with the bulb, out of the reflector.
- Press the bulb into the socket, turn it 90° counterclockwise, and pull it out.
- Install the new HB4 bulb in the socket (the narrow end rests against the retainers; turn it 90° clockwise until it clicks).
- Insert the socket back into the headlight and turn it clockwise until it stops.
- Check the low beams (turn the ignition on, then switch on the headlights).
- Repeat the procedure for the other headlight.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Avoid touching the glass of the new bulb with your fingers, since halogen bulbs are sensitive to skin oils. If you do touch it, wipe it with rubbing alcohol or install it while wearing gloves. Check the socket for play in the reflector. If it wobbles, vibration can cause the bulb to fail prematurely.
