Ford Explorer (5th generation): Low Beam Bulb Replacement

The low beam bulbs on the 5th-generation Ford Explorer are replaced from the engine compartment without removing the headlights. Both sides are accessible, but on the passenger side access may be tight because of the air filter housing. It is recommended to replace both bulbs at the same time so they have the same brightness and color temperature.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 15-20 minutes Steps: 10 Tools: cotton gloves, flashlight, flat-blade screwdriver (if needed)

Part

  • 🔩 H11 bulb (low beam), OE Ford BE8Z-13N021-B or aftermarket equivalents Osram 64211, Philips 12362, Bosch 1987301012

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Turn off the engine, remove the key from the ignition, and set the headlight switch to OFF. If the bulbs were recently on, let them cool for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod. Put on gloves. Do not touch the glass envelope of a halogen bulb with bare hands (oily residue causes localized overheating and shortens bulb life).
  3. Locate the rear of the headlight assembly behind the corresponding fender. On the passenger side, the air filter housing may block access. If needed, loosen the air duct clamp and move the housing 5-7 cm (2-3 in) to the side for easier access.
  4. Press the locking tab on the bulb's power connector (the plastic tab on top or on the side) and pull the connector straight back. If the connector is stuck, carefully pry the tab with a flat-blade screwdriver, taking care not to break the latch.
  5. Turn the bulb counterclockwise a quarter turn (about 90 degrees) until it stops, then pull the bulb straight out toward you.
  6. Hold the new H11 bulb by its plastic base (not the glass envelope), align the tabs on the base with the slots in the headlight socket, and insert the bulb all the way in.
  7. Turn the bulb clockwise a quarter turn. It should lock in place with a light click.
  8. Push the power connector onto the bulb base until the latch clicks.
  9. Repeat the procedure for the other headlight.
  10. Turn on the low beams and check that both bulbs work. If you moved the air filter housing, put it back in place and tighten the clamp.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • If you touched the glass envelope with your fingers, wipe it with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth before installing. Halogen bulbs heat up to 300-400 degrees (roughly 570-750°F), and fingerprints cause the glass to blacken and the bulb to fail early. Do not use a bulb with a higher wattage than specified (the H11 standard is 55 W). It overheats the headlight reflector and can melt the plastic parts of the housing.
