Mini Countryman (R60): Battery Replacement

On the Countryman R60, the battery is located in the cargo area under the floor. The job is not difficult, but modern MINI/BMW vehicles have a battery state sensor. After replacement, the new battery must be registered in the control unit. Otherwise the car will charge it using the old battery's algorithm, which shortens the new battery's service life.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 30-60 minutes Steps: 13 Tools: socket set and ratchet (usually 10 mm and 13 mm), socket extension, torque wrench, terminal brush or terminal cleaner spray, multimeter. Recommended: a 12 V backup power supply connected through the cigarette lighter or the diagnostic port, so the control units don't lose their memory. To register the new battery you need a diagnostic scan tool that supports BMW/MINI.

Part

  • 🔩 12 V battery, with the same dimensions and polarity as the original. Capacity is usually in the 60-80 Ah range and cold cranking current is 530-800 A. Check the label on the old battery for the exact values. If the car has a Start-Stop system, install an AGM or EFB battery (AGM preferred). A conventional flooded lead-acid battery will fail quickly. I'm not giving a part number because it depends on the vehicle's equipment

Step by step

13 steps
  1. Turn off the engine, close the doors, remove the key and walk away from the car with it. If possible, connect a 12 V backup power supply. Write down the radio codes if you need them, and check how the power windows work manually.
  2. Open the trunk, lift the mat and the cargo floor panel. The battery is under the floor, usually on the right, under a plastic cover or housing. Remove the cover and any fasteners in the way.
  3. Disconnect the negative terminal first. To do this, loosen the terminal nut (usually a 10 mm wrench) and lift the terminal off the post. Move the terminal aside so it cannot touch the post.
  4. Next, disconnect the positive terminal. The positive cable on a MINI may have a safety battery disconnect element. Do not take it apart or damage it. Remove the protective cap from the positive terminal.
  5. Locate the battery sensor on the negative cable (IBS). Do not stretch the connector or pull on the wire. If it is attached to the terminal, move it to the new battery together with the terminal.
  6. If the battery has a vent hose (gas vent), disconnect it from the battery case. Remove the hold-down bar or bracket (the bolt is usually 13 mm) and carefully lift the battery out. It is heavy, about 15-25 kg, so lift with your legs, not your back.
  7. Clean the battery tray of dust and residue. Check that the vent hose and the drain hole are intact and not clogged. Wipe the terminals with a brush until they are bright and clean.
  8. Install the new battery in the same position, with positive and negative on the same sides as before. Secure it with the hold-down bar. Tighten the bar to the manufacturer's specification. It is usually moderate, so do not overtighten, or the case may crack.
  9. Connect the vent hose (if there was one). Connect the positive terminal first, then the negative. Tighten carefully. The torque for the terminals is low, about 5-8 N·m (4-6 lb-ft), without excessive force, so you don't strip the lead post. Install the protective cap on the positive terminal.
  10. Install the cover and put the cargo floor back in place.
  11. Register the new battery in the system. You need a scan tool with BMW/MINI coding capability (ISTA, ICOM or similar). In the menu, select battery replacement registration and enter the capacity and type (AGM or flooded lead-acid). Without registration, charging errors and incorrect Start-Stop operation are possible.
  12. Start the engine and check the voltage at the terminals with a multimeter. At idle it should be about 13.8-14.8 V. Check the operation of the power windows (initialization may be needed), the clock, the navigation and the radio. Clear any fault codes that appeared because the power was disconnected.
  13. Take the old battery to a recycling point. It contains lead and acid, and it must not be thrown in the trash.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Always disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last, so you don't short the body and the positive terminal with a tool. Do not smoke or work near open flames: the battery can release explosive gas. If the car has a Start-Stop system, install only a battery of the same type (AGM or EFB), otherwise charging and the system will not work correctly. If you don't have a scan tool for registration or lack experience, it is better to go to a repair shop that can do it all at once.
