Toyota RAV4 2.5 2AR-FE (2015): Battery Replacement

Replacing the battery on a fourth-generation RAV4 with the 2.5 gasoline engine does not require any module reprogramming, but the negative terminal has an IBS (intelligent battery sensor) mounted on it, so handle it carefully. The radio may lock after power is disconnected, so you will need the unlock code from your service booklet.

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Turn the ignition off and remove the key from the cabin, or move the smart key away from the vehicle. Wait 1-2 minutes for the systems to power down.
  2. Open the hood and locate the battery on the right side of the engine compartment.
  3. Using a 10 mm wrench, loosen the nut on the negative terminal, lift the terminal off the post, and move the cable aside so it cannot touch ground.
  4. Loosen the nut on the positive terminal with the same wrench and remove the terminal.
  5. Using a 10 mm wrench, remove the nut on the hold-down clamp and take off the hold-down bracket.
  6. Lift the old battery straight up and out. It weighs about 12-15 kg (26-33 lb).
  7. Inspect the battery terminals and posts. If they are corroded, clean them with fine sandpaper or a wire brush. Wipe the battery tray with a dry rag.
  8. Install the new battery, making sure the polarity matches (positive on the right, negative on the left when you stand facing the front of the car).
  9. Install the hold-down bracket and tighten the nut with a 10 mm wrench.
  10. Place the positive terminal on the post and tighten the nut until snug, without excessive force.
  11. Place the negative terminal (with the IBS sensor, a small plastic module on the ground cable) on the post and tighten the nut.
  12. Close the hood and start the engine. Let it idle for 2-3 minutes so the systems can initialize. If necessary, enter the radio unlock code.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not install a battery with a lower capacity or cranking current than 60 Ah and 550 A, as this will cause hard starting and undercharging. The IBS sensor on the negative terminal is fragile, so do not drop the terminal or bend the cable sharply. The RAV4's electronic systems will recalibrate on their own over a few hours of driving after the replacement.
