Mercedes-Benz A-Class W177 (4th generation): Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter on the W177 should be replaced every 15,000 km or once a year. The M260 engine has no effect on the procedure, and the job is the same for all versions of this generation. The exact order of panel removal depends on the model year and trim level. What follows is the general procedure. If it differs from what you see on your car, go by what you see.

Step by step

11 steps
  1. Park the car on level ground and turn off the ignition. You don't need the key for work inside the cabin.
  2. Clear the passenger side: open the right-hand door and remove the floor mat from the front right footwell.
  3. The filter housing is on the front passenger side, behind the glove box or in the footwell below it. Open the glove box, release the travel stop, and remove the glove box. It is usually held by clips and a few screws.
  4. If the lower footwell trim panel is in the way, carefully pop it loose with the trim tool and move it aside. Do not pull on any wires or connectors that may be there. Disconnect them instead.
  5. Find the filter housing cover. Open it by turning the latches or removing the screws. Note how the old filter is installed, and remember the direction of the airflow arrow.
  6. Carefully pull out the old filter. It may consist of one or two sections. Do not shake it out inside the cabin.
  7. Use the vacuum cleaner to remove leaves and dust from the housing. Do not wipe the housing with a wet cloth.
  8. Install the new filter with the arrow pointing in the direction of airflow, the same way the old one was installed. The frame must sit flat, with no misalignment or gaps along the edges.
  9. Close the cover and tighten the latches or screws by hand. Do not overtighten the plastic fasteners.
  10. Reinstall the glove box, the travel stop and the footwell panel, then put the floor mat back.
  11. Turn on the ignition and run the heater fan at different settings. Check the airflow and make sure there are no unusual noises.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • All panel fasteners are plastic and brittle
  • Do not use force, and use the trim tool
  • If the car has a passenger airbag in the glove box area, do not damage its wiring harnesses or connectors
  • If the filter does not sit flat after installation, the direction or the sections have been mixed up
  • Take it apart and try again
