Toyota Corolla 2.0 VVT-i M20A-FKS (2022): Spark Plug Replacement

On the M20A-FKS engine, the spark plug replacement interval is 120,000 km or 10 years. The engine uses Denso iridium spark plugs with a 0.8 mm gap. The procedure is straightforward and takes about half an hour with basic skills.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 14 Tools: 10 mm socket with 1/4-inch ratchet, 14 mm (9/16 inch) spark plug socket, long extension, 3/8-inch ratchet, torque wrench, compressed air or clean rag, dielectric grease

Step by step

14 steps
  1. Open the hood and clear access to the top of the engine. Clean the area around the ignition coils with compressed air or a rag to keep dirt from falling into the spark plug wells.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil: press the locking tab and pull the connector upward.
  3. Remove the ignition coil mounting bolt with a 10 mm socket by turning it counterclockwise.
  4. Gently rock the coil from side to side and pull it out of the spark plug well. Do not yank it, because the rubber boot fits tightly on the spark plug.
  5. Insert the 14 mm spark plug socket with an extension into the spark plug well and seat it on the plug. Unscrew the plug counterclockwise.
  6. Inspect the old spark plug. A light brown electrode color is normal. Black carbon deposits or oil point to engine problems.
  7. Insert the new spark plug into the spark plug socket, where the rubber insert will hold it. Lower it into the well and thread it in by hand for several turns.
  8. Tighten the spark plug with a torque wrench to 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft). Without a torque wrench, after hand-tightening, turn it an additional 1/8 to 1/4 turn with a ratchet.
  9. Apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the inside surface of the ignition coil's rubber boot. This helps prevent arcing (voltage breakdown) and makes later removal easier.
  10. Install the coil into the spark plug well and seat it onto the spark plug with light pressure until it stops.
  11. Install the coil mounting bolt with a 10 mm socket, turning it clockwise, and tighten it to 10 N·m (89 lb-in).
  12. Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  13. Repeat steps 2-12 for the other three cylinders. Work on one spark plug at a time; do not remove all the coils at once.
  14. Start the engine and listen to it at idle. The sound should be smooth, with no misfires.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not apply anti-seize compound to the spark plug threads. The cylinder head is aluminum, and the compound can cause corrosion. Do not exceed the specified torque, because the ceramic insulator of the spark plug is brittle. When replacing, use only genuine plugs or quality iridium equivalents with the correct 0.8 mm gap. Cheap copper-nickel plugs do not provide stable operation on this engine and last 3-4 times less.
