Toyota Corolla 1.6 16V (2006): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

The 1.6 lubrication system (ZZ series with VVT-i) is serviced by changing the oil and filter. The scheduled interval is about 10,000-15,000 km or once a year. For city driving and frequent short trips, 7,000-10,000 km is better. While you are at it, check for leaks, the condition of the drain plug, the crankcase breather, and the oil level.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 9 Tools: Drain plug wrench (hex key or socket, size depends on the plug, so check it on the car), oil filter wrench (strap or cup type, matching your filter), torque wrench, funnel, drain pan of 5 L (5.3 qt) or larger, shop rags, lift, pit or secure jack stands.

Part

  • 🔩 Engine oil 5W-30 or 0W-30 synthetic (API SL/SM, ACEA A3/B4), about 3.5-4 L (3.7-4.2 qt). Oil filter: genuine Toyota for ZZ-series engines or an aftermarket equivalent from Mann, Bosch, or Knecht/Mahle. Check visually whether your engine uses a spin-on filter or a cartridge element in a housing before buying. New drain plug washer (gasket)

Step by step

9 steps
  1. Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes so the oil is thin, then shut it off. Do not work on a hot engine, because the oil and the exhaust manifold can burn you.
  2. Park the car level on a lift, over a pit, or on jack stands. If there is an engine undershield, remove it.
  3. Unscrew the oil filler cap to speed up draining. Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug and remove the plug. Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Inspect the plug and its threads. Replace the sealing washer and install the plug. Tightening torque is about 35-45 N·m (26-33 lb-ft); check the exact value against the manufacturer's specification. Do not overtighten: the oil pan is aluminum and the threads strip easily.
  5. Replace the oil filter. If it is a spin-on type, unscrew it with the filter wrench over the drain pan. Lubricate the new filter's gasket with fresh oil, screw it on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten about 3/4 of a turn more. If it is a cartridge type, remove the housing cap, replace the element and the cap's O-ring, and tighten to specification.
  6. Pour in about 3.5 L (3.7 qt) of oil, wait a couple of minutes, and check with the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts up to the MAX mark. Total capacity with the filter is about 3.7 L (3.9 qt), so do not overfill.
  7. Install the filler cap. Start the engine and let it run for 30-60 seconds. The oil pressure warning light should go out 1-2 seconds after startup.
  8. Check the drain plug and filter for leaks. Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and check the dipstick level again, topping up if necessary.
  9. Take the used oil and filter to a recycling collection point. Do not pour them onto the ground or down a drain.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • A doubled gasket (the old gasket stuck to the mounting surface) and an overtightened filter or drain plug are the most common causes of leaks. If the engine noticeably loses oil between changes (consumption above 0.5-1 L per 1,000 km (0.5-1 qt per 600 mi)), that calls for diagnosing the valve stem seals and piston rings, not routine maintenance. Check the oil level every 1,000-2,000 km.
