Volkswagen Polo 1.6 MPI CWVA (2019): Manual Transmission Oil Change
The manual transmission on the Polo 1.6 MPI (CWVA) is from the MQ200 family. According to the maintenance schedule, the fluid is filled for life. However, with heavy use, taxi service or leaks, it is changed every 60,000-90,000 km (37,000-56,000 miles). The fill capacity is approximately 1.9-2.1 L (2.0-2.2 qt). Check the exact value and the required fluid specification against the transmission marking and the owner's manual.
Parts
3- 🔩 Synthetic manual transmission fluid, SAE 75W (VW-approved for MQ200 family) about 2 L (2.1 qt)
- 🔩 Manual transmission drain plug sealing ring new
- 🔩 Manual transmission fill plug sealing ring new

Step by step
10 steps- Warm up the transmission by driving for 10-15 minutes so the fluid thins out. Park the car on a level surface, pit or lift, apply the parking brake and switch off the ignition.
- Remove the underbody skid plate, if fitted. Locate the fill plug on the side of the transmission housing and the drain plug at the bottom of the transmission case. Clean the area around the plugs of dirt.
- Loosen the fill plug first. If it will not come out, do not drain the fluid: you will not be able to refill the transmission afterward.
- Position the drain pan and remove the drain plug. Let the fluid drain completely, which takes 10-15 minutes. Inspect the plug and the fluid: fine metal dust on the magnet is acceptable, but large metal chips indicate transmission wear.
- Clean the plug, replace the sealing ring and tighten the drain plug. Tightening torque is approximately 20-30 N·m (15-22 lb-ft); check the exact value against the plug marking and the manufacturer's data.
- Pump fresh fluid in through the fill hole with a syringe or pump. Keep filling until fluid begins to seep out of the hole: the level must be even with the lower edge of the hole. The amount should come to about 2 L (2.1 qt).
- Wait 2-3 minutes for the level to settle and, if necessary, top up to the edge of the hole.
- Install the fill plug with a new sealing ring, tightening torque approximately 20-30 N·m (15-22 lb-ft) (check the manufacturer's specification). Wipe any oil off the transmission.
- Install the underbody skid plate. Take a short 10-15 minute drive, shifting through all the gears. Then inspect the plugs again for leaks.
- After a few days, if possible, check the level again: on a warm transmission it should be at the lower edge of the fill hole.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not mix fluids with different specifications, and do not pour automatic transmission fluid or ATF into a manual transmission: this will cause harsh shifting and accelerated synchronizer wear
- Do not overfill above the edge of the hole, or the fluid will be forced out through the breather and the seals
- Only work under a raised vehicle when it is supported on solid stands, never on a jack alone
