Audi A6 3.2 FSI (AUK, 2005): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
On the 3.2 FSI (AUK) engine, the oil and filter change interval is 15,000 km or once a year. The filter is a cartridge type (a paper element inside a housing) located on top of the engine under the decorative cover. The drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan.
Part
- 🔩 Oil filter: Audi 06E115562C (equivalents: Mann HU719/7X, Mahle OX171/2D). Oil: 6.5-7.0 L (6.9-7.4 qt) of synthetic engine oil, 5W-30 or 5W-40, meeting VW 502.00 or VW 504.00 (Castrol Edge, Mobil 1, Shell Helix Ultra, Liqui Moly). A new drain plug sealing ring (if needed). Oil filter housing gasket (usually included with the OEM filter)

Step by step
18 steps- Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-10 minutes of driving), then shut it off and wait 2-3 minutes so the oil drains down into the pan.
- Raise the front of the car with a jack and set it on jack stands, or use a lift. Make sure the car is stable.
- Remove the plastic engine undercover, if equipped (usually held by clips or bolts).
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug. Use a 6 mm hex bit to remove the drain plug. Be ready for a stream of hot oil. Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
- Inspect the drain plug and its sealing ring. If the ring is flattened or cracked, replace it. Wipe the plug threads and the oil pan surface with a rag. Thread the drain plug in by hand until snug, then tighten it with a torque wrench to 30 N·m (22 lb-ft).
- Open the hood. Remove the decorative plastic engine cover (Audi logo) by pulling it upward; the clips will release.
- Locate the black plastic oil filter housing at the front of the engine (above the right fender, as seen from the driver's seat direction of travel). Disconnect the electrical connector from the oil level sensor on the filter housing (press the locking tab and pull).
- Using a 36 mm socket with a breaker bar, turn the filter housing cap counterclockwise to remove it. Oil will begin to drain as you unscrew it, so hold a rag or a small container underneath.
- Pull out the old filter element together with the cap. Inspect the housing; there may be a small amount of oil at the bottom, so wipe it out with a clean rag.
- Remove the old filter and the sealing ring from the cap. Install the new sealing ring into the groove on the cap (usually included with the OEM filter). Insert the new filter element into the cap.
- Lubricate the sealing ring with fresh engine oil. Install the cap with the filter into the housing and tighten it by hand until snug (firm, but without excessive force, as the plastic can crack). Housing torque: no more than 25 N·m (18 lb-ft) (the manufacturer recommends hand-tightening; if you use a torque wrench, do not exceed 25 N·m (18 lb-ft)).
- Reconnect the electrical connector to the oil level sensor.
- Unscrew the oil filler cap (located on top of the engine, usually yellow). Using a funnel, pour in 6.0 L (6.3 qt) of engine oil.
- Screw the oil filler cap back on. Reinstall the decorative engine cover.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure warning light should go out within 2-5 seconds. Shut off the engine.
- Wait 3-5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan. Check the oil level with the dipstick. The level should be between the MIN and MAX marks (ideally closer to MAX). If needed, add oil in portions of 0.2-0.3 L (0.2-0.3 qt), checking the level each time.
- Inspect the drain plug and the filter housing for leaks. Tighten if necessary.
- Reinstall the engine undercover (if it was removed).
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not exceed the tightening torque on the plastic filter housing; excessive force can crack the housing and cause an oil leak. Do not overfill the oil above the MAX mark; this raises pressure in the crankcase ventilation system, can push out seals, and accelerates catalytic converter wear. Always use oil that meets VW 502.00 or VW 504.00 specifications; using oil that does not meet them can damage the engine and may void the warranty.
