Bentley Bentayga 4.0 V8 Twin-Turbo (2022): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

The Bentley Bentayga with the 4.0 V8 Twin-Turbo engine uses a modified version of the Audi 4.0 TFSI. The oil change interval is every 15,000 km or 12 months. The procedure requires care: the oil filter housing is on top of the engine under the decorative cover, while the oil pan is at the bottom. Be sure to use synthetic 5W-40 oil meeting VW 511 00 specification. This is the manufacturer's requirement to protect the life of the turbochargers and the variable valve timing system.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 60-90 minutes Steps: 21 Tools: lift or inspection pit, oil drain pan (10+ L (10.6 qt)), funnel, 32 mm socket (for the filter housing), 6 mm hex key (for the filter housing drain plug), torque wrench, shop rags

Part

  • 🔩 oil filter 06M198405F (alternate number 06M115561H), synthetic engine oil 5W-40 meeting VW 511 00 specification (9.5-10 L (10.0-10.6 qt)), oil pan drain plug washer, oil filter housing O-ring, oil filter housing drain plug O-ring

Step by step

21 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature (80-90°C), then shut it off and let it cool for 5-10 minutes. Warm oil drains more completely, while the risk of burns is minimal.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a lift or position it over an inspection pit, and secure it with the parking brake.
  3. Remove the lower engine undertray (plastic clips plus Torx T25 bolts; the number depends on trim level, usually 8-12).
  4. Place a drain pan of at least 10 L (10.6 qt) under the oil pan drain hole.
  5. Remove the oil pan drain plug (usually M14 or M16, hex socket) and let the oil drain completely (5-7 minutes). Tightening torque on reinstallation is 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft); confirm the exact value in the manufacturer's service data. Be sure to replace the copper or aluminum sealing washer.
  6. Go to the engine bay. Remove the decorative engine cover (held by clips or bolts).
  7. Locate the oil filter housing on top of the engine (a black plastic cylinder about 90 mm in diameter). Underneath the housing is a small hex screw (6 mm). This is the filter housing drain plug.
  8. Place a rag or a small container under the filter housing. Unscrew the filter housing drain plug with a 6 mm hex key and drain the remaining oil from the housing (usually 0.2-0.3 L (0.2-0.3 qt)). Tightening torque on reinstallation is 4 N·m (3 lb-ft). Replace the plug O-ring.
  9. Unscrew the oil filter housing counterclockwise with a 32 mm socket. Remove the old filter element from the housing.
  10. Wipe the inside of the housing with a clean rag. Inspect the threads and sealing surfaces for damage.
  11. Replace the O-ring on the filter housing (it sits in a groove on the threaded section). Lubricate the new O-ring with a thin film of fresh oil.
  12. Install the new filter element into the housing (there is usually only one orientation, with the wide side down).
  13. Thread the housing back into its seat. Tightening torque is 25 N·m (18 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, as the plastic can crack.
  14. Install the filter housing drain plug with the new O-ring, torque 4 N·m (3 lb-ft).
  15. Go back under the vehicle and install the oil pan drain plug with the new sealing washer, torque 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft).
  16. Through the oil filler neck (under the cap with the oil can symbol), add approximately 9 L (9.5 qt) of fresh 5W-40 VW 511 00 oil.
  17. Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds. Make sure the oil pressure warning light goes out (it usually goes out 2-3 seconds after starting).
  18. Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and check the oil level with the dipstick. The level should be between the MIN and MAX marks (ideally about 3/4 of the way between them). If necessary, top up in small amounts (0.2-0.3 L (0.2-0.3 qt) at a time), waiting 2-3 minutes each time and rechecking.
  19. Inspect the area around the drain plug and filter housing for leaks. If you find a leak, tighten the connection or check that the seals are installed correctly.
  20. Reinstall the undertray and the decorative cover.
  21. Reset the service interval counter through the on-board computer menu (usually: Settings → Service → Reset Oil Service) or with a diagnostic scan tool.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Using oil that does not meet VW 511 00 specification will lead to accelerated wear of the turbochargers and the variable valve timing system, and may void the manufacturer's warranty. The Bentley Bentayga is equipped with an oil quality and level sensor, and the system may detect a mismatch. Do not overfill the oil pan (level above MAX), as excess pressure can damage the crankshaft and turbocharger seals. If you have no experience working on premium-segment vehicles, it is recommended to go to an authorized Bentley service center, because mistakes during an oil change on a vehicle of this value can lead to costly repairs.
