Daewoo Espero 1.8 C18LE (1997): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
Changing the engine oil on a Daewoo Espero with the C18LE engine should be done every 10,000-15,000 km or once a year. The procedure is standard for front-wheel-drive GM-Daewoo sedans. It requires a warmed-up engine and access from underneath the car.
Part
- 🔩 Oil filter GM 96879797 or 96395221 (equivalents: Mann W914/2, Bosch 0451103336, Mahle OC384). Engine oil: semi-synthetic 10W-40 or synthetic 5W-30 (API SJ/SL or higher), 3.75 L (4.0 qt). Drain plug gasket
Step by step
9 steps- Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-10 minutes of running), shut it off, and park the car on a level surface or on ramps.
- Raise the front of the car with a jack (and support it securely on jack stands) or drive it over an inspection pit, and set the parking brake.
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug in the center of the oil pan, then loosen the plug with a 17 mm wrench (counterclockwise). Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
- Remove the oil filter with a filter wrench, or by hand if access allows. It is located on the front right side of the engine block. Wipe the mounting surface clean.
- Lubricate the rubber seal of the new filter with fresh oil and fill the filter about two-thirds full of oil. Screw the filter on by hand until the seal contacts the mounting surface, then tighten it an additional three-quarters of a turn.
- Replace the copper drain plug gasket (if worn) and tighten the plug to 25-35 N·m (18-26 lb-ft). Do not overtighten it, or you may strip the threads.
- Pour 3.5 L (3.7 qt) of oil in through the oil filler neck, start the engine for 30 seconds, shut it off, and wait 5 minutes.
- Check the level with the dipstick. The oil level should be between the MIN and MAX marks. If needed, top it up to the upper mark (total capacity 3.75 L (4.0 qt)).
- Inspect the oil pan and filter for leaks, and wipe down the underside of the engine.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Take the used oil and filter to a recycling collection point (repair shop, auto parts store, or service station). Do not overtighten the drain plug. The oil pan threads are aluminum and strip easily.
