GAC GS8 (2nd generation): Battery Replacement
The GS8 II with the 2.0 Turbo engine has an automatic start-stop system, so it is important to install a battery of the same type (AGM or EFB) rather than a standard lead-acid one. The procedure is standard: disconnect the negative terminal, then the positive, release the hold-down, replace the battery, and reconnect in reverse order. Check the exact battery location and wrench sizes on your vehicle visually, as they may vary by trim level.
Part
- 🔩 12 V starter battery of the same type as the one installed in the vehicle (on models with start-stop this is usually AGM or EFB), with the same polarity, the same dimensions, and the same capacity, with a cold cranking current rating no lower than the original. The specifications are printed on the label of the old battery
Step by step
16 steps- Park the vehicle on level ground, apply the parking brake, turn off the engine, remove the key or switch off the ignition button, and close all doors. Wait 5-10 minutes so the control modules can finish shutting down.
- If possible, connect a 12 V external power source to the cigarette lighter socket or to a memory-saver terminal to preserve the clock, radio, and seat position settings. If not, write down your codes and settings, as they may be reset.
- Open the hood and locate the battery. It is in the engine compartment, usually on one side, under a plastic cover or housing. Remove the cover, which is held by clips or small screws.
- Disconnect the negative terminal first (black cable, "-" mark). Loosen the terminal bolt and lift the terminal off the post. If a battery condition sensor (a current sensor, a small module on the cable) is fitted to the negative terminal, do not damage its connector and do not disconnect it unless necessary.
- Then disconnect the positive terminal (red cable, "+" mark), sliding back the protective cap if needed. Move the cables aside so they cannot touch the battery posts.
- If the battery has a vent hose (gas outlet), carefully remove it and note its position.
- Remove the battery hold-down bracket or clamp by unscrewing the bolt or nut. Do not drop the hardware into the engine compartment.
- Lift out the battery, holding the case with both hands. It is heavy, roughly 15-20 kg, so keep it upright to avoid spilling electrolyte.
- Clean the battery tray and the cable terminals of corrosion and dirt. Check the condition of the cables and the tray.
- Install the new battery in the same position (polarity and post layout must match) and secure the bracket. Tighten the hold-down moderately, so the battery does not move but the case is not crushed. The exact torque is given in the manufacturer's service manual.
- Connect the vent hose, if there was one.
- Connect the positive terminal first, then the negative. Tighten carefully so the terminal does not rotate on the post, without excessive force. Apply a thin layer of terminal grease and refit the protective caps.
- Install the battery cover. Turn on the ignition and check that the instruments work. Start the engine and make sure there are no error messages on the instrument cluster.
- After replacement, the one-touch power windows (auto mode and anti-pinch protection), clock, multimedia settings, and the memory positions of the steering wheel and seats may be reset. Reinitialize the power windows: lower the window all the way down, then raise it all the way up and hold the button for 2-3 seconds.
- After a battery change, the start-stop system often needs some time to adapt: during the first drives it may not shut off the engine at stops. This is normal. If the vehicle has a battery monitoring system that requires registering the new battery, resetting the counters is done with diagnostic equipment. Without this, the charge level may be monitored inaccurately.
- Take the old battery to a recycling center or to the store where you buy the new one: it contains lead and acid and must not be thrown in the trash.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Always disconnect the negative first and connect it last, otherwise a wrench can short against the body. Do not let tools bridge the terminals. Do not smoke or allow sparks near the battery: it can release explosive hydrogen. Wear gloves and safety glasses: electrolyte is corrosive. The exact procedure for registering a new battery in the control module for this specific model could not be found in public sources, so only the general principle is given. If warning lights come on after replacement, start-stop does not work, or the charge level is read incorrectly, diagnostics with adaptation using a scan tool are needed.
