Honda Freed (1st generation): Wiper Blade Replacement

Wiper blades on the Freed should be replaced every 6-12 months, or right away if you notice streaks, chatter or squeaking on the glass. The car is right-hand drive, so the blade lengths on the driver and passenger sides may differ from what you're used to on left-hand-drive cars. Don't mix them up, and check the length against your old blades. The procedure is the same for the hybrid and gasoline versions.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 10-15 minutes Steps: 8 Tools: None required (if needed, a soft rag or a piece of cardboard to place under the wiper arm)

Part

  • 🔩 Front wiper blade set (driver and passenger sides, different lengths) and a separate rear wiper blade. I'm not giving exact OE part numbers without knowing your trim and market, to avoid giving you the wrong one. Frame or beam (frameless) blades with a J-hook attachment in the matching length will fit. It's best to choose them from the blade manufacturer's catalog for the Freed GB3/GB4 or to measure your old blades with a tape measure

Step by step

8 steps
  1. Turn the ignition off (on the hybrid, the READY indicator must not be lit) and make sure the wiper arms are in their normal rest position. Measure the length of the old blades: the driver and passenger sides may be different.
  2. Place a folded rag or a piece of cardboard under the wiper arm so that if it falls accidentally, it won't hit the glass and cause a chip or crack.
  3. Lift the wiper arm with the blade away from the glass to its locked position, so the blade sits at roughly 90° to the arm.
  4. Find the plastic locking tab on the blade where it connects to the arm's hook. Press the tab and slide the blade along the arm toward its base to release it from the hook, then remove it.
  5. Thread the new blade onto the arm's hook, slide it until the lock clicks, and pull on it to check that it is secure. If adapters are included, use the one that fits on the hook without play.
  6. Carefully lower the arm onto the glass. Repeat the procedure on the other side.
  7. The rear blade is usually removed separately: lift the arm away from the glass and remove the blade in the same way as the front ones. If your blade uses a different attachment type (a pin or a latch), press the lock at the attachment point and pull the blade off the arm. Install the new one until it clicks.
  8. Top off the washer fluid reservoir if the level is low. Turn on the washers and check that all the blades work. Make sure they don't hit each other or the body pillars, and that the wipe is clean and streak-free.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not run the wipers without blades or with a poorly secured blade, or the metal of the arm will scratch the glass. It's best not to wipe dry glass with the blades: spray washer fluid first. If the blades are frozen to the glass in winter, defrost the glass first instead of pulling them off by force.
