Honda S-MX (1st generation): Air Filter Replacement

On the S-MX with the B20B engine, the air filter sits in a plastic housing in the engine bay. Replace it about every 15,000 km or once a year, and more often in dusty conditions. The exact procedure for this model is not documented in open service materials, so the steps below follow the general principle for this type of Honda housing.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 10-20 minutes Steps: 9 Tools: Phillips screwdriver (for screws or the duct clamp, if needed), clean dry rag

Part

  • 🔩 Engine air filter, panel type, for the B20B 2.0 (aftermarket equivalents: Mann, Filtron, Bosch, Denso, Sakura). The exact OE part number for this model is not confirmed in open sources, so choose the filter by vehicle application: Honda S-MX RH1 1996-2002, 2.0

Step by step

9 steps
  1. Shut off the engine, let it cool, and open the hood. Find the black plastic air filter housing. It connects to the throttle body through a corrugated air duct.
  2. Inspect the housing cover. It is secured by metal spring clips or by screws around the edge. Release the clips or remove the screws.
  3. If the air duct or a sensor connector is in the way, loosen the duct clamp with a screwdriver. Do not disconnect connectors unless necessary. If you do disconnect one, remember how it was positioned.
  4. Lift the cover and move it aside. Be careful not to strain the wiring harness or the duct.
  5. Remove the old filter. Note which way it was facing so you can install the new one the same way.
  6. Wipe the inside of the housing and the cover with a dry rag. Remove leaves and dust. Make sure no debris falls into the intake tract, and do not reach toward the throttle with the rag.
  7. Compare the new filter with the old one for size and shape. Seat the new filter flat in its place so the rubber seal sits evenly around the entire perimeter with no distortion.
  8. Close the cover and secure all the clips or screws. If you removed the duct, tighten the clamp firmly but without excessive force, so you don't damage the plastic.
  9. Start the engine. The idle should be smooth, with no air leaks or unusual noises.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not drive without a filter, and do not install a filter with a loose-fitting seal. Dust quickly wears the cylinders and fouls the sensors. Do not wash or blow out a paper filter instead of replacing it, because this reduces its filtering ability.
