Lada Iskra (1st generation): Glove Box Removal

The exact factory procedure for the Iskra is not documented in open sources, so this is the general principle for a Lada glove box with a hinged lid. Your mounting layout may differ slightly, so inspect the glove box carefully first and work without force. On trims with a cooled glove box there is an air duct, so be careful not to damage it.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 15-30 minutes Steps: 9 Tools: PH2 Phillips screwdriver, 8-10 mm socket or wrench (if bolts are present), plastic trim panel tool, flashlight

Part

  • 🔩 Not required. If the mounting tabs break, you will need repair clips and a complete glove box assembly (a separate item from the glove box lid and latch)

Step by step

9 steps
  1. Turn off the engine and remove the key. To work safely around the wiring, disconnect the negative battery terminal if the glove box has a light or other electrical components.
  2. Open the glove box lid and take out all the contents, as well as any liners and organizers.
  3. Inspect the inner walls of the glove box. Look for mounting screws or bolts, usually 2-4 of them along the top edge, on the sides, and on the bottom. Remove them.
  4. Inspect the lid travel limiters (a damper, cord, or stop near the side wall). Remove them by squeezing the tabs or pulling them out of the slot.
  5. If the glove box has a light or a switch, disconnect the connector by pressing the locking tab. Do not pull on the wires.
  6. For a cooled glove box, find the flexible air duct from the climate system. Remove it by loosening the clamp or unplugging the connection.
  7. Pull the glove box slightly toward you and down to release the upper latches. If it does not come out, look for a hidden screw or clip and do not pull with force.
  8. If the lid is in the way, remove it by squeezing the hinge tabs on the sides and pulling the pins out of their sockets. Then carefully take out the glove box body.
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Check that the air duct and wires are not pinched, tighten the screws without excessive force, and make sure the lid closes without binding.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • The passenger airbag is located near the glove box. Do not hit the panel, do not yank it out abruptly, and do not touch the SRS connectors (usually yellow). If you need to disassemble the dash panel itself to reach the screws and you lack experience, take the car to a repair shop.
