Lada Iskra 1.6 16V (106 hp) (2026): Clutch Slave Cylinder Replacement
The Lada Iskra with the VAZ-21129 engine (106 hp) and the 6-speed WanLiYang manual transmission uses a concentric clutch slave cylinder. It is integrated with the release bearing and mounted on the input shaft inside the clutch housing. Replacement requires partial or complete removal of the transmission. The procedure is difficult and requires experience working on drivetrains.
Part
- 🔩 Concentric clutch slave cylinder (integrated with the release bearing). Confirm the exact part number with an official Lada dealer for the VAZ-21129 engine with the Chinese 6-speed WanLiYang manual transmission
Step by step
27 steps- Position the vehicle on a lift or over a pit, secure it with the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Drain the brake fluid from the clutch master cylinder reservoir into a prepared container.
- Disconnect the cable or hydraulic line from the clutch master cylinder (in the engine compartment).
- Remove the engine undercover (if installed) and the splash shields.
- Disconnect the gear shift linkage (shifter, rods), the transmission sensors, and the reverse light connector.
- Remove the driveshafts (axle shafts) on both sides: loosen the hub nuts (tightening torque on reassembly 200-250 N·m (148-184 lb-ft)), pull the shafts out of the transmission, and plug the openings with a clean rag.
- Place a jack or support under the engine to hold it after the transmission is removed.
- Remove the bolts securing the transmission to the engine (usually 4-6 bolts around the clutch housing).
- Remove the fasteners of the left transmission mount.
- Carefully pull the transmission rearward. The input shaft will come out of the clutch pressure plate together with the concentric cylinder.
- Lower the transmission onto the floor or a stand, keeping it balanced (the transmission weighs 40-50 kg (88-110 lb)).
- Remove the old concentric slave cylinder from the input shaft. It is held by a spring retainer or latch (depending on the WanLiYang design).
- Inspect the release bearing that is part of the cylinder. If it is worn, leaking, or binding, replacement is mandatory.
- Install the new concentric cylinder onto the input shaft until the retainer clicks.
- Check that the cylinder slides smoothly along the shaft and is not cocked.
- Inspect the clutch disc and pressure plate. If the mileage is over 100,000 km or there are signs of wear, replacing the clutch kit (disc, pressure plate, and bearing with cylinder assembly) is recommended.
- Reinstall the transmission in reverse order. Align the input shaft with the splines of the clutch disc (the disc is centered with an alignment tool, or with an old shaft when assembling on a bench).
- Tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts in a crisscross pattern to 40-50 N·m (30-37 lb-ft).
- Install the transmission mount and tighten to 50-60 N·m (37-44 lb-ft).
- Install the driveshafts and tighten the hub nuts to 200-250 N·m (148-184 lb-ft), then lock them (if the design provides for it).
- Reconnect the shift linkage, rods, sensors, and the reverse light connector.
- Reconnect the hydraulic line to the clutch master cylinder.
- Fill the reservoir with DOT 4 brake fluid up to the MAX mark.
- Bleed the clutch hydraulic system. Open the bleeder fitting on the master cylinder (if accessible) or on the connecting line, press the clutch pedal 10-15 times until the air bubbles stop coming out, then close the fitting.
- Top up the fluid to the correct level and check the connections for leaks.
- Install the engine undercover and splash shields, and reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Check clutch operation. The pedal should feel firm, gears should engage without grinding, and the clutch should disengage fully.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Replacing the concentric clutch slave cylinder requires removing or partially disassembling the transmission. This is a difficult job that requires experience and special tools (jack, lift, torque wrench). If you have no experience working on transmissions, have the work done at an authorized Lada service center. Incorrect installation can damage the clutch disc or the input shaft, or cause a brake fluid leak. The Lada Iskra is built on the Renault CMF-B platform with the VAZ-21129 engine and the Chinese WanLiYang 6-speed manual, so the transmission and clutch design may differ from classic VAZ models.
