Lada Iskra (Generation I): Replacing the Low Beam Bulbs
The low beam bulb on the Iskra is mounted in the headlight unit and is reached from the engine compartment side. Replacement takes a few minutes and does not require removing the headlight, but the access order depends on trim level. The exact procedure for this model is not documented in open service materials, so below is the general principle for Lada headlight units. Check the bulb type and retention method against the old bulb you remove.
Part
- 🔩 Halogen low beam bulb for the headlight unit, 12 V, one for each headlight. Buy the same bulb type and base as the one installed in the headlight (the type is printed on the base of the old bulb, for example H7 or H4). Replace both bulbs at the same time
Step by step
11 steps- Turn off the engine, switch off the headlights, and let the bulbs cool down. Open the hood.
- Locate the back of the relevant headlight. The low beam cover is usually rubber or plastic, round or oval. If an air duct, hose, or reservoir is in the way, move or remove only what comes off without tools.
- Remove the protective cover by turning it counterclockwise or by pulling its tab.
- Disconnect the power connector from the bulb base. Press the connector's locking tab and pull straight, without twisting. Do not pull on the wires.
- Release the bulb. It is held by a spring wire clip: press it down and swing it aside. If the bulb has a bayonet mount, turn it counterclockwise. Note the position of the old bulb.
- Carefully remove the bulb, without twisting or rocking it.
- Take the new bulb out of its package, holding it by the base. Do not touch the glass envelope with your fingers: skin oils and fingerprints cause overheating and burnout. If you do touch it, wipe the envelope with rubbing alcohol and let it dry.
- Insert the bulb into the reflector, aligning the locating tabs on the base with the slots. Secure it with the clip or by turning it.
- Plug in the power connector until it clicks and refit the protective cover. It must seat all the way around its perimeter, otherwise moisture will get into the headlight and it will fog up.
- Turn on the low beams and check both headlights. Reinstall everything you removed (hose, air duct).
- Check the beam aim against a wall or on an aiming rig. If the beam pattern has changed after the replacement, adjust the headlights.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not use higher-wattage bulbs or cheap LED bulbs in halogen optics: they blind oncoming drivers, quickly overheat the headlight, and can cause electrical system errors. Work with the ignition off to avoid shorting the connector contacts. If a bulb burns out too often or the headlight does not light with a new bulb, check the fuse, the relay, and the connector for burnt contacts.
