Lada Iskra (Generation I): Removing a Foreign Object from the Heater Air Intake
The heater air intake is located in a recess under the rear edge of the hood, next to the windshield. This is the area under the seal and the plastic grille, where leaves, small twigs and other debris usually end up. The exact disassembly procedure for the Iskra is not documented in open sources, so what follows is the general principle. Check the fasteners and the removal order on the car itself, and don't break anything.
Part
- 🔩 Not required. If the object has damaged the filter, you will need a cabin filter (carbon type, size matching the Iskra)
Step by step
9 steps- Shut off the engine, turn off the ignition and switch off the heater fan. Set the air intake mode to fresh air, not recirculation. This makes it easier to draw the object toward the intake, and you will see where it leads.
- Open the hood and inspect the recess at the windshield. Remove any visible debris by hand or with a vacuum cleaner.
- Remove the wiper blades together with the arms if they cover the grille. To do this, lift the arm away from the glass, press the retaining tab and remove the blade. Note the position of the arms before removing them. Undo the arm nuts only if necessary, and mark their position with a marker.
- Remove the upper hood seal at the base of the windshield. It is usually held by clips, so pry it off with a plastic trim tool.
- Remove the plastic air intake grille (cowl panel). Remove the screws and carefully release the clips. Don't pull hard: plastic is brittle in cold weather.
- Shine a flashlight into the intake duct. Remove small objects with a magnetic pickup tool, tweezers or a thin vacuum nozzle. If the object has fallen deeper, don't push it farther in. It could end up in the heater housing and on the blower fan impeller.
- If the object has gone into the heater housing, remove the cabin filter. It is usually located behind or under the glove box. Through the filter opening, inspect the housing and remove the object. If the filter is clogged or torn, replace it.
- Turn the fan on at low speed and listen for noise or knocking. Then check all speeds. If you hear knocking or vibration, stop the fan and inspect the impeller. To do this, remove the lower panel or the glove box and reach the fan motor.
- Reassemble in reverse order: the grille, the seal, the arms and the blades. Check that the wipers work, and make sure the blades return to their park position and do not touch the hood.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Don't run the fan at full speed until you are sure the object has been removed. It can damage the impeller or jam the motor. Don't pour water into the intake and don't blow it out with compressed air: the debris will go deeper, and water can get into the heater housing and the electrical system. If the object has gone deep into the heater housing and removing the dashboard is beyond your skill level, it is better to go to a repair shop so you don't break the mounting points.
