Lexus LX (J200): Rear Brake Rotor Replacement
On the J200, the rear rotor is ventilated, and the floating caliper is mounted to the bracket with two bolts. A separate drum-type parking brake sits inside the rotor "hat." Replace rotors in pairs per axle together with the pads. If the rotor is seized on the hub, remove it after removing the caliper and bracket, and if needed, back off the parking brake shoes.
Part
- 🔩 rear ventilated brake rotor for Lexus LX 570 (2 pcs, one axle set), rear brake pads (recommended to replace as a set per axle), caliper slide pin repair kit if needed. Verify the OE part number by VIN in a parts catalog, as J200 rotors differed by model year and trim
Step by step
13 steps- Park the vehicle on level ground, shift into P and place wheel chocks under the front wheels. Do not apply the parking brake. Slightly loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheel.
- Raise the rear of the vehicle, support it on jack stands and remove the wheel.
- Remove the lower caliper slide pin bolt, swing the caliper upward and lift it off the pads. On some versions it is easier to remove both caliper bolts and take the caliper off completely. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose: suspend it with wire from the suspension spring or the body.
- Remove the pads, noting the position of the anti-squeal shims and spring clips.
- Remove the two bolts securing the caliper bracket to the steering knuckle and take off the bracket. These bolts are usually tightened very firmly, so use a long breaker bar.
- If the rotor has a retaining screw on a wheel stud, remove it with a screwdriver. Remove the rotor. If it is seized, treat the hat with penetrating oil and tap the hat with a hammer. If the rotor still will not come off, rotate the parking brake shoe adjuster wheel through the access hole in the hat to retract the shoes from the drum.
- Clean the hub and the mounting surface with a wire brush down to bare metal so there is no rust. Inspect the parking brake shoes and drum for wear and contamination with oil, and replace the shoes if necessary.
- Wipe the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove the protective coating. Install the rotor, then reinstall the retaining screw.
- Install the caliper bracket and tighten its bolts to the manufacturer's specification. The torque for this assembly is high, approximately 80-130 N·m (59-96 lb-ft). Confirm the exact value in the service manual for your version.
- Clean the caliper slide pins and lubricate them with the appropriate grease. Install the new pads with anti-squeal shims. Push the piston back with a C-clamp, first making sure the brake fluid reservoir will not overflow. On calipers with a built-in parking brake mechanism, the piston would have to be screwed in (the J200 does not have this, since its parking brake is drum-type), but here it is simply pressed in.
- Install the caliper and tighten the bolts to specification, approximately 35-60 N·m (26-44 lb-ft). Install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts in two stages in a crisscross pattern. The lug nut torque for the LX is about 130 N·m (96 lb-ft). Lower the vehicle and tighten fully.
- Repeat on the other side. Before driving, pump the brake pedal several times until it is firm, and check the brake fluid level.
- Bedding in: 8-10 brake applications from about 60 to 20 km/h (about 37 to 12 mph) without coming to a full stop, and avoid hard braking for the first 200 km (about 125 miles). Check the parking brake operation and adjust it if necessary.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Brakes are a safety system. If you lack experience, have the work done at a repair shop. Do not press the brake pedal with the caliper or pads removed: the piston will come out of the cylinder. Replace rotors and pads in pairs per axle. Do not inhale brake dust and do not use compressed air for cleaning. Do not use the parking brake if its shoes are not properly adjusted: it must hold the vehicle securely on a slope.
