The 3UR-FE engine takes 7.5 L (7.9 qt) of oil with a filter change. The scheduled interval is 10,000 km or 12 months. Under severe conditions (towing, frequent short trips, dusty roads), change it every 5,000 km. The filter is a cartridge type installed in a plastic housing on top of the engine.

  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature, shut it off, and let it cool for 5 minutes.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a lift or park it on a level surface (the skid plate is removable: 4 bolts, 10 mm, around the perimeter).
  3. Place the drain pan under the drain plug (in the center of the oil pan) and loosen the plug with a 14 mm wrench, turning counterclockwise. Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
  4. While the oil drains, open the hood and locate the oil filter housing (a black plastic cup about 10 cm (4 in) in diameter, on the left side of the engine, on top).
  5. Unscrew the filter housing cap counterclockwise with the cap wrench (loosen it by hand once it breaks free). Remove the old filter cartridge together with the sealing ring.
  6. Wipe the seating area in the housing, install the new cartridge, lubricate the sealing ring with fresh oil, and tighten the cap by hand until it stops, plus another quarter turn.
  7. Replace the copper washer on the drain plug (included with the filter or sold separately as Toyota 90430-12031) and tighten the plug to 40-45 N·m (30-33 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, because the threads are in aluminum.
  8. Pour 7 L (7.4 qt) of 0W-20 oil in through the oil filler neck, wait 3 minutes, and check the level with the dipstick. The mark should be between MIN and MAX.
  9. Start the engine, let it idle for 1 minute, shut it off, and wait 5 minutes. Recheck the level and top up to the upper mark if needed (usually another 0.3-0.5 L (0.3-0.5 qt) is required).
  10. Inspect the oil pan and filter housing for leaks and wipe away any drips with a rag.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not routinely use 5W-30 or 10W-40 oil. The engine is designed for low-viscosity 0W-20 to save fuel and reduce load on the oil pump. Exceeding the change interval under severe use leads to piston ring coking and increased oil consumption.
