Mazda CX-9 3.7 V6 (2012): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The 3.7 V6 lubrication system is serviced by changing the oil and filter. The typical interval is 7,000-10,000 km (about 4,500-6,000 miles) or once a year; with city driving, heavy traffic and short trips, stay closer to 7,000 km (4,500 miles). Fill only with oil of the recommended viscosity. The procedure requires no special knowledge, but you need to be careful with the seals and with checking the oil level.
Part
- 🔩 SAE 5W-20 engine oil (API SM/SN or ILSAC GF-4/GF-5 specification), approximately 5.2 L (5.5 qt) when changing the filter (4.7 L (5.0 qt) without the filter). Oil filter: spin-on type for the Mazda CX-9 3.7 V6, genuine Mazda or aftermarket such as Mann, Bosch, Filtron. New aluminum or copper drain plug gasket (crush washer)

Step by step
14 steps- Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes until it is warm: the oil will be thinner and drain more completely. Do not do this on a hot engine, to avoid burns. Shut off the engine and wait 5-10 minutes.
- Park the vehicle on a level surface, set the parking brake, and raise it on the lift or support it on jack stands. If there is an underbody skid plate, remove it.
- Open the oil filler cap on the engine: this helps the oil drain better.
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug in the oil pan and remove the plug. Let the oil drain for at least 10-15 minutes.
- Clean the threads and the sealing surfaces of the plug and the oil pan. Install a new gasket and tighten the plug. The torque for an aluminum oil pan with this type of plug is usually in the range of 25-40 N·m (18-30 lb-ft) (check the exact value against the manufacturer's specification). Do not overtighten, to avoid stripping the threads in the pan.
- Place the drain pan under the oil filter (look for it on the side/bottom of the block; on the V6 it is accessible when inspecting from below; some oil dripping onto the exhaust manifolds is unavoidable, so cover them with a rag). Unscrew the filter counterclockwise with the filter wrench.
- Make sure the old filter gasket has not stayed on the engine mounting surface. Wipe the mounting surface with a clean rag.
- Lubricate the rubber gasket of the new filter with fresh oil. If possible, pour some oil into the new filter (as much as its position allows) to reduce oil starvation at the first startup.
- Screw the filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface, then tighten about 3/4 of a turn further (follow the instructions printed on the filter body). Do not overtighten with a tool.
- Reinstall the skid plate if you removed it. Lower the vehicle onto its wheels.
- Pour in approximately 4.5 L (4.8 qt) of fresh 5W-20 oil through the filler neck, then close the cap.
- Start the engine and run it for 30-60 seconds. The oil pressure light should go out within 1-2 seconds after startup. Inspect the filter and drain plug for leaks.
- Shut off the engine, wait 5-10 minutes, and check the level with the dipstick on a level surface. Top up to the MAX mark in small amounts. A level between MIN and MAX, closer to the upper mark, is acceptable.
- Take the used oil to a designated collection facility. Record the mileage and date of the change.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not overfill the oil: excess causes foaming, increased consumption and possible oil blow-out through the crankcase ventilation. Do not use thicker oil (for example, 10W-40) without need. If the oil pressure light stays on after the change or leaks appear, shut off the engine immediately and fix the cause. The oil filter and oil pan are hot during operation, so be careful to avoid burns.
