Mini Clubman 1.5 Turbo Cooper (B38, 136 hp) (2017): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The B38 engine uses a cartridge-type oil filter in a housing on top of the engine. The scheduled interval is every 30,000 km or 24 months, but for a turbocharged engine it is recommended to shorten it to 10,000-15,000 km. The procedure can be done without removing the underbody shield, and most of the work is done from above.

Step by step
14 steps- Warm the engine up to operating temperature (70-80 °C), shut it off, and let it cool for 5-10 minutes. The oil will flow freely but won't burn you.
- Raise the front of the car with a jack and set it on jack stands. You can also work over a pit or on a lift.
- Remove the decorative engine cover (it is held by clips or Torx T25 screws).
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug (at the bottom of the oil pan, accessed from below).
- Using a 13 mm wrench, slowly loosen the drain plug and let the oil drain completely (5-7 minutes).
- While the oil drains, use the 32 mm socket to loosen the oil filter housing cap from above, turning it counterclockwise. The cap comes off slowly, and the remaining oil will run out of the housing, so lay down rags.
- Remove the old filter cartridge from the housing. Wipe the inside of the housing with a clean rag and remove the old O-ring from the cap.
- Lubricate the new O-ring (supplied with the filter) with clean engine oil and fit it onto the filter cap. Insert the new cartridge into the housing until it clicks.
- Tighten the filter housing cap to 25 N·m (18 lb-ft).
- Replace the aluminum sealing washer on the drain plug and tighten the plug to 25 N·m (18 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, as you can strip the threads in the oil pan.
- Remove the oil filler cap (on top of the engine) and pour in 4.0 L (4.2 qt) of oil through a funnel.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds, then shut it off. Wait 2-3 minutes and check the level with the dipstick. The oil level should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
- Top up the oil to the upper mark (usually 0.3-0.5 L (0.3-0.5 qt)). The total capacity with the filter change is 4.5 L (4.8 qt).
- Check for leaks at the drain plug and the filter housing. Reinstall the decorative engine cover.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not use oil below the LL-01 approval. The B38 turbocharger is sensitive to lubricant quality, and carbon deposits on the turbo valve will lead to a drop in boost pressure and costly repairs. Dispose of the used oil and filter at a designated collection facility.
