Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 1.5 MIVEC Turbo (4B40) (2022): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The 4B40 direct-injection engine requires oil meeting the newer API SP / ILSAC GF-6 standards to protect against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI). The scheduled replacement interval is every 15,000 km or 12 months. Under severe driving conditions (city driving, cold weather), it is recommended to shorten this to 7,000-10,000 km.
Part
- 🔩 Oil filter MD360395 (aftermarket equivalents: Fram PH5317, VIC C-415, Mann W610/3), drain plug gasket, engine oil API SP / ILSAC GF-6, viscosity 5W-30 or 0W-30 — 4.3 L (4.5 qt)

Step by step
12 steps- Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature, 80-90°C. Warm oil drains better.
- Raise the front of the vehicle on a lift or drive it over an inspection pit, and secure it with the parking brake.
- Remove the skid plate (if installed) by undoing the fasteners around its perimeter.
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug (at the bottom of the oil pan) and remove the plug with a 14 mm wrench. Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
- Replace the copper sealing washer on the drain plug with a new one and tighten the plug to 39 ± 5 N·m (29 ± 4 lb-ft). If you don't have a torque wrench, tighten it hand-tight plus a quarter turn with the wrench, and don't overdo it.
- Unscrew the old oil filter counterclockwise (it is located on the right side at the front of the cylinder block and is accessible from above). Use a filter wrench if necessary. Wipe the mounting surface with a clean rag.
- Lubricate the rubber gasket of the new filter with clean engine oil and fill the filter half full with oil. Screw the new filter on by hand until the rubber gasket makes contact, then tighten it another three-quarters of a turn (by hand, without a tool).
- Install the skid plate and lower the vehicle.
- Pour 4 L (4.2 qt) of fresh oil through the oil filler neck (under the yellow cap on the valve cover). Close the cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Check under the car for leaks.
- Shut off the engine and wait 5 minutes. Check the level with the dipstick. It should be between the MIN and MAX marks. If necessary, top up in portions of 100-200 mL (3.4-6.8 fl oz) until you reach the upper mark.
- Reset the maintenance interval indicator: turn the ignition on (without starting the engine), press the INFO button on the steering wheel 10 times in a row, then hold it on the 11th press until the message confirming the counter reset appears.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not use oils meeting API SN / GF-5 or older standards. A turbocharged direct-injection engine is prone to pre-ignition with older formulations. Always replace the drain plug gasket at every oil change, because reusing it leads to leaks. In cold weather with frequent short trips, shorten the oil change interval to 5,000-7,000 km because of fuel dilution of the oil.
