Renault Magnum 11.1 D (E-Tech, 440 hp) 2004: Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The 10.8 L DXi11 engine in the Renault Magnum E-Tech 440 needs an oil change every 40,000-60,000 km, depending on operating conditions. The lubrication system capacity is 36 L (38 qt). This is a standard procedure for heavy trucks and requires a lift or an inspection pit.
Part
- 🔩 Renault oil filter 7421700201 (equivalents: Donaldson P553191, Fleetguard LF4006), engine oil 10W-40 API CI-4/CJ-4 or ACEA E7/E9, 36 L (38 qt), copper drain plug sealing washer
Step by step
15 steps- Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-10 minutes of running), shut it off, and wait 5 minutes. Hot oil drains better and carries debris out of the oil pan.
- Position the truck over an inspection pit or on a lift, secure it with the parking brake, and place wheel chocks under the wheels.
- Place a drain pan of at least 40 L (42 qt) under the engine oil pan (draining takes 10-15 minutes).
- Use a 24-27 mm wrench to remove the drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan. The oil comes out under pressure, so keep your hands clear. Wait until it has drained completely.
- Inspect the copper washer on the plug. If it is deformed, replace it with a new one. Wipe the sealing surface on the oil pan with a clean rag.
- Install the drain plug with a new washer and tighten it to 35-45 N·m (26-33 lb-ft). Check the manufacturer's specification for the exact value; for heavy-duty engines it is usually 40 N·m (30 lb-ft).
- Loosen the old oil filter with a filter wrench, then unscrew it by hand. 0.5-1 L (0.5-1 qt) of oil will spill out of it, so keep rags ready.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface on the engine block and make sure the old filter's rubber gasket has not stuck to it.
- Fill the new filter about 2/3 full with fresh oil and lubricate its rubber sealing ring with oil.
- Install the new filter by hand until the gasket touches the base, then tighten it another 3/4 turn (about 270 degrees). Do not use the filter wrench for tightening, to avoid overtightening.
- Pour 34-35 L (36-37 qt) of fresh oil through the oil filler neck (the cap is on the right side of the valve cover). Leave 1-2 L (1-2 qt) to top up using the dipstick.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out within 3-5 seconds. Shut the engine off.
- Wait 10 minutes, then check the level with the dipstick. The mark should be between MIN and MAX. Top up if necessary.
- Inspect the drain plug and filter for leaks and wipe them dry. Start the engine and check again for leaks.
- Reset the service interval counter (if equipped) using the instrument cluster or the diagnostic connector.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not start the engine right after draining the oil. The filter must be pre-filled with oil. Otherwise, the crankshaft and turbocharger run dry for the first few seconds, which shortens bearing life. Take used oil to a collection facility or recycling center, and never dump it on the ground. Use oil meeting ACEA E7 or higher. Low-grade oil in a turbodiesel causes coking of the piston rings and the turbocharger. If the engine consumes oil (more than 1 L per 10,000 km (1 qt per 6,000 miles)), have the cylinder-piston group and the turbocharger diagnosed. An oil change will not fix the problem.
