Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 (2021): Engine Air Filter Inspection and Replacement

On the Corolla Cross 1.8 (2ZR-FE/FAE engine), the air filter should be replaced every 30,000 km or every 36 months. The filter housing is located at the front of the engine bay on the right side, behind the driver-side headlight assembly. The procedure requires no tools and takes 10-15 minutes.

Step by step

14 steps
  1. Open the hood and secure it in the open position.
  2. Locate the black plastic air filter housing to the right of the engine, behind the driver-side headlight and in front of the fuse box.
  3. Flip down the front right metal clip.
  4. Flip down the rear right metal clip.
  5. Slide the housing cover to the right to release the two tabs on the left side.
  6. Lift the housing cover up.
  7. Pull the old filter straight up and out.
  8. Inspect the filter: if you hold it up to a light and no light passes through, replacement is required. Paper filters must NOT be cleaned, only replaced.
  9. Optional: vacuum the bottom of the housing to remove sand, leaves and debris.
  10. Install the new filter with the pleats facing down and the rubber sealing rim facing up.
  11. Insert the cover tabs into the slots on the left and lower the cover into place.
  12. Snap both metal clips on the right shut until they click.
  13. Check that the cover is seated tightly and the clips are securely latched.
  14. Start the engine and check for air leaks and for any warning lights on the instrument cluster.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not use reusable oiled filters unless you have experience maintaining them. Improper oiling can contaminate the mass airflow sensor and increase fuel consumption. Never blow paper filters out with compressed air or wash them with water, as this damages the filter media. If the Check Engine light comes on, fuel consumption increases or you notice a loss of power, inspect the filter ahead of the regular schedule.
