Toyota Harrier 2.0 (2021): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
On the Harrier XU60 with the 2.0 gasoline engine, change the oil and filter every 10,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. The filter here is a cartridge type: only the paper element is replaced along with the oil, and the housing cap stays on the engine. Check the viscosity and specification against the sticker on the oil filler cap and in the owner's manual. The exact fill capacity depends on the engine version, so use the dipstick as your guide.
Part
- 🔩 Low-viscosity engine oil meeting Toyota specifications for Dynamic Force gasoline engines (usually 0W-16 or 0W-20, API SN/SP, ILSAC GF-5/GF-6), about 4-5 L (4.2-5.3 qt). Cartridge-type oil filter (replaceable paper element in a plastic housing, genuine Toyota or aftermarket such as Mann or Sakura). New filter cap O-ring, if not included with the filter. Drain plug gasket (aluminum or copper washer)
Step by step
12 steps- Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes so the oil is fluid but not scalding hot. Shut off the engine and wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain down into the oil pan.
- Park the car on level ground and set the parking brake. Raise the front on a lift or on a jack with jack stands. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
- Remove the plastic engine undercover, if fitted. It is usually held by screws or bolts around the edge.
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug. Remove the oil filler cap on top, so the oil drains faster and more completely. Remove the drain plug and let the oil drain for at least 10 minutes.
- Clean the plug threads and the sealing surface on the pan. Install a new gasket and tighten the plug with a torque wrench. For Toyota this is usually 35-45 N·m (26-33 lb-ft); confirm the exact value in the manufacturer's service information. Do not overtighten: the threads in an aluminum oil pan strip easily.
- Place the pan or rags under the oil filter housing, because the remaining oil will spill out when you unscrew it. Unscrew the filter cap with a correctly sized socket. Remove the old paper element and take off the old cap O-ring.
- Wipe the inside of the housing and cap with a clean rag. Lubricate the new O-ring with fresh oil and install it. Insert the new element and screw on the cap. The torque for plastic caps is low (about 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft)); check the exact value in the service information. Do not overtighten, or you may crack the cap.
- Install the engine undercover. Lower the car onto level ground.
- Pour in about 4 L (4.2 qt) of oil and wait 2-3 minutes. Then check the level with the dipstick and add oil in small amounts until it is between the minimum and maximum marks. Do not go above the upper mark.
- Close the oil filler cap. Start the engine and let it run for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out within a few seconds. Inspect the drain plug and filter cap for leaks.
- Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and recheck the dipstick level, topping up if necessary. Take the used oil and old filter to a recycling collection point.
- Reset the maintenance interval counter through the instrument cluster menu (the procedure depends on trim level and is described in the owner's manual).
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not mix oils of different viscosities and specifications, and do not fill with oil thicker than Toyota requires: Dynamic Force engines are designed for low-viscosity oils. Make sure you remove the old drain plug gasket and the old filter O-ring, as double sealing will cause a leak. If you are unsure about safely supporting the car on jack stands, go to a repair shop.
