Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI (DENA, 286 hp, 2019): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

On the Touareg III (CR) with the 3.0 TDI diesel, change the oil every 15,000 km or once a year, per the manufacturer's schedule. Under severe service (frequent short city trips, cold climate, towing), shorten the interval to 10,000 km.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 45-60 minutes Steps: 12 Tools: Lift or inspection pit, Torx T25/T30 socket set (for the underbody shield), 6 mm hex key, 32 mm oil filter housing socket (3/8"), torque wrench, funnel, 8-10 L (8.5-10.6 qt) oil drain pan, shop rags

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-10 minutes of running), shut it off and set the parking brake. Hot oil drains better.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a lift or drive it over an inspection pit. Remove the lower engine undertray (skid plate) by undoing the Torx T25 and T30 bolts around its perimeter.
  3. Place a drain pan of at least 8 L (8.5 qt) under the oil pan. Remove the drain plug with a 6 mm hex key (it is on the oil pan). Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Replace the sealing ring on the drain plug (or install a new complete plug N91167901). Tighten the plug to 30 N·m (22 lb-ft).
  5. Locate the oil filter housing on the top of the engine (right side, accessible from the engine bay). Use a 32 mm (3/8") socket to unscrew the housing cap. As you unscrew it, a small valve inside the housing opens and the remaining oil drains into the oil pan.
  6. Remove the old filter element and wipe the inside of the housing with a clean rag. Check the condition of the sealing ring on the cap (a new ring comes with filter 059198405B; replace it if necessary).
  7. Install the new filter element 059198405B in the housing. Tighten the filter housing cap to 25 N·m (18 lb-ft).
  8. Through the oil filler neck (under the hood), use a funnel to pour in 5.5-6.0 L (5.8-6.3 qt) of oil meeting specification VW 507 00 or VW 504 00, viscosity 5W-30/5W-40. Total system capacity is 6.1 L (6.4 qt).
  9. Close the oil filler cap and run the engine at idle for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure warning light should go out within 3-5 seconds. Shut off the engine.
  10. After 5 minutes, check the oil level with the dipstick. It should be between the MIN and MAX marks (ideally about 3/4 of the way between them). If necessary, top up with 100-200 ml (3.4-6.8 fl oz).
  11. Inspect the drain plug and filter housing for leaks. Reinstall the undertray and tighten the bolts.
  12. Reset the service interval indicator through the on-board computer menu (Settings → Service → Reset interval) or with a VCDS/OBDeleven diagnostic adapter.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Use ONLY oil approved to VW 507 00 for diesel engines with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Oils of other specifications shorten the life of the catalytic converter and the particulate filter. Do not fill the oil above the MAX mark. Excess oil can get into the crankcase ventilation system and cause accelerated turbocharger wear. Always replace the drain plug sealing ring, because reusing it leads to oil leaks. When working with hot oil, wear protective gloves, since the temperature of the used oil can reach 90-100°C (194-212°F).
