Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: The First Electric AMG Crossover With Up to 1,169 hp — Breaking Down the October 17, 2026 Reveal

On October 17, 2026, Mercedes-AMG revealed the GT SUV — the first full-size SUV that AMG has developed entirely on its own, and it is fully electric from day one. The top GT 63 makes up to 1,169 hp (860 kW) and 2,000 Nm of torque, hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.7 seconds and charges at up to 710 kW. Here is what was shown, which numbers are still preliminary, and what is genuinely unusual about this car.

Only the GT 53 has a price so far: from €113,050 in Germany including 19% VAT (recommended, non-binding). Mercedes has not announced prices for the GT 55 and GT 63.

The top speeds require the Driver’s Package. The times in brackets use the “1-foot rollout” method (the first 30 cm are not counted).

What is under the skin

The GT 63 and GT 55 have three axial-flux electric motors: one at the front and two at the rear. The front one is a “booster” that disconnects at light loads to save energy. The GT 53 uses two synchronous motors and a two-speed rear transmission. All versions have fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive.

The battery is an 800-volt unit in two sizes: 106 kWh (18 modules) and 128 kWh (22 modules), with directly cooled cylindrical cells and an energy density of more than 298 Wh/kg. The car weighs between 2,525 and 2,715 kg (5,567–5,986 lb).

Charging and range

  • 128 kWh pack: up to 710 kW DC; up to 450 km (280 miles) of WLTP range added in 10 minutes; 10–80% in up to 12 minutes; 16 minutes on a 400 kW charger;
  • 106 kWh pack: up to 600 kW; 10–80% in 11 minutes; 14 minutes on a 400 kW charger;
  • WLTP range: up to 700 km (435 miles) — 620–700 km for the GT 63 and GT 55 with the 128 kWh pack, 597–668 km for the GT 53;
  • AC charging up to 11 kW.

An important caveat from Mercedes itself: the charging figures, including 710 kW, are preliminary. And chargers rated at 710 kW barely exist: most fast chargers are limited to around 400 kW.

A suspension that replaces the anti-roll bars

The most interesting piece of engineering is AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ (standard on the GT 63, optional on the GT 55). It actively cancels body pitch and roll and replaces conventional anti-roll bars, working with three-stage adjustable air springs. The rear wheels steer by up to 6°: against the front wheels below 80 km/h and with them above. The front suspension is multi-link, with forged-aluminum links and steering knuckles. Brakes: carbon-ceramic as standard on the GT 63, optional on the GT 55, steel on the GT 53.

Dimensions and aerodynamics

Length 5,084 mm, width 2,001 mm, height 1,656 mm, wheelbase 3,040 mm (the GT 53 is 5,080 mm long and 1,653 mm tall). Drag coefficient 0.27 for the GT 63 and GT 55, 0.28 for the GT 53. The trunk holds 607 liters, 1,740 liters with the rear seats folded, plus a 78-liter front trunk. The rear bench seats three.

The active aerodynamics are called AEROKINETICS: a roof spoiler that adjusts from 150 km/h (GT 63 and GT 55) and vertical slats in the front bumper that open only when extra cooling is needed.

Cabin and sound

A 14.0-inch multimedia screen, a 10.2-inch instrument cluster and an optional 14-inch passenger display. The SKY CONTROL panoramic roof switches between transparent and opaque. The new-generation MBUX runs on the MB.OS operating system and connects three AI assistants (ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, Google Gemini).

The engine sound is artificial: the AMGFORCE Sport+ mode plays a V8 (GT 63 and GT 55) or an inline-six (GT 53), recorded from more than 100 measurements with 16 microphones on reference cars, including the Mercedes-AMG GT R. There are simulated gear shifts and seat shakers. The car is built in Sindelfingen, Hall 32, which was retooled for AMG.EA technology.

Our verdict

The GT SUV is the first full-size SUV AMG has built entirely in-house, and the set of solutions shows it. What matters here is not the power but the fact that the engineers removed the anti-roll bars and fitted an active system and rear-wheel steering: a car weighing over two and a half tons is supposed to drive like a sports car. How well that works we will only learn from road tests; for now the key charging figures are preliminary, and the most interesting version — the GT 63 — arrives only in spring 2027.

We will keep following it: as soon as Mercedes confirms the GT 55 and GT 63 prices and the final charging figures, we will update this breakdown.
