Ford Ranger (2023): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The 2023 Ranger T8 is sold with several engines: the 2.0 EcoBlue and 3.0 V6 diesels, and the 2.3 and 3.0 EcoBoost gasoline engines. The procedure is the same for all of them. What differs is the oil capacity, the filter type, and the filter location. Ford's scheduled maintenance interval is 15,000 km or 1 year. Under severe conditions (heavy traffic, dust, towing, short trips), change it more often.
Part
- 🔩 Engine oil meeting the Ford specification for your engine, usually grade 5W-30. For the 2.0 EcoBlue and 3.0 V6 diesels, this is Ford WSS-M2C950-A. For the 2.3 EcoBoost gasoline engine, it is WSS-M2C948-B. The exact specification is listed in the owner's manual. You also need an oil filter (a filter element with seals or a complete filter, depending on the engine) and a new drain plug washer if the seal is not built into the plug. Oil: 6-8 L (6.3-8.5 qt). Step by step
13 steps- Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes so the oil thins out. Do not bring it to full operating temperature, because hot oil can burn your hands. Shut off the engine and wait 5-10 minutes so the oil drains down into the oil pan.
- Park the vehicle on level ground and set the parking brake. Raise it on a lift or drive it over a pit. If you use jack stands, never work under the vehicle while it is supported only by a jack.
- If necessary, remove the engine undershield (many trims have one). It is usually held by bolts around its perimeter.
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug. Unscrew the plug. The oil will come out in a stream, so pull your hand away right away. Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
- While the oil drains, open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. This speeds up draining.
- Locate the oil filter. On the EcoBlue diesels, it is a plastic housing on top of the engine, and the filter is a replaceable element. Place rags under the housing, because oil will spill out. Unscrew the housing cap with a socket or filter wrench, then remove the old element and the seals.
- Wipe the mating surfaces, lubricate the new seals with clean oil, and install the new element. Tighten the housing cap to the specified torque (usually 20-30 N·m (15-22 lb-ft)). Do not overtighten, because the plastic can be damaged.
- Wipe the drain plug and the seating surface on the oil pan. Replace the sealing washer if it is a separate part. Install the plug and tighten it with a torque wrench (usually 25-40 N·m (18-30 lb-ft); use the exact value from the manufacturer's specification for your engine).
- Pour in fresh oil, starting with 5-6 L (5.3-6.3 qt). Wait for it to drain down into the oil pan, then check the level on the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts up to the MAX mark, but not above it. The refill capacity with a filter change depends on the engine and is usually 6-8 L (6.3-8.5 qt).
- Close the filler cap and run the engine for 30-60 seconds. The oil pressure light should go out within 2-3 seconds. Check the drain plug and the filter for leaks.
- Shut off the engine and wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick level again and top up if needed.
- Reinstall the engine undershield. Reset the service interval indicator through the instrument cluster menu (if your trim has one).
- Pour the used oil into a container and take it to a recycling center.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not fill the oil above the MAX mark. On the EcoBlue diesels, excess oil can get into the crankcase ventilation system and the turbocharger. Use only oil that meets the Ford specification listed in the owner's manual. Diesels with a particulate filter require low-SAPS oil, or the filter will clog. Do not overtighten the drain plug or the filter cap, because the threads in the aluminum oil pan and the plastic housing are easily damaged.
