Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRDi D4HB (2022): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

The D4HB diesel's lubrication system is serviced by changing the oil and the filter element. An engine with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) needs low-SAPS oil only, or the filter will clog faster. The usual change interval is 10,000-15,000 km (6,000-9,500 miles) or once a year. Under severe use (city driving, short trips, heavy traffic), change it more often.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-1.5 hours Steps: 12 Tools: Jack and jack stands or a lift, drain plug wrench (usually 17 mm, check against your plug), oil filter housing cap socket or wrench, torque wrench, 8-10 L (8.5-10.5 qt) drain pan, funnel, shop rags, tools for removing the engine undercover if needed

Part

  • 🔩 Engine oil for diesels with a particulate filter, ACEA C2 or C3 (low-SAPS), viscosity 5W-30. Oil filter as a replaceable paper element (cartridge) with O-rings for the housing cap. New drain plug gasket (washer). Oil capacity is about 6.5-7.5 L (6.9-7.9 qt). Check the oil filler cap and the owner's manual for the exact capacity and approval

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes so the oil thins out. Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.
  2. Park the car on level ground. Support it on jack stands or drive it onto a lift. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
  3. If needed, remove the engine undercover (the fasteners depend on trim level).
  4. Place the drain pan under the engine. Remove the oil filler cap to speed up draining. Unscrew the oil pan drain plug and let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes. Hot oil can burn you, so wear gloves.
  5. Clean the plug threads and the sealing surface. Install a new washer and tighten the plug with a torque wrench. The torque is usually in the range of 30-45 N·m (22-33 lb-ft). Confirm the exact value in the manufacturer's service data. Do not overtighten, since the threads in an aluminum oil pan strip easily.
  6. Find the oil filter housing on the upper part of the engine. It is a round cap. Lay rags around it to catch oil. Unscrew the cap. The oil in the housing usually drains out through a built-in valve.
  7. Remove the old filter element. Take the old O-ring off the cap and install a new one, lightly lubricated with fresh oil. Insert the new element and screw on the cap. Tighten it with a torque wrench. The torque is usually about 20-30 N·m (15-22 lb-ft). Confirm the exact value in the manufacturer's service data. The plastic cap does not tolerate overtightening.
  8. Pour about 6 L (6.3 qt) of oil into the engine, wait a couple of minutes, and check the level on the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts up to the MAX mark. Do not overfill, as this is harmful to the engine and the particulate filter.
  9. Close the oil filler cap. Start the engine and let it run for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out immediately or within 1-2 seconds. Check for leaks at the drain plug and the filter cap.
  10. Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and recheck the oil level on the dipstick. Top up if needed.
  11. Reset the service interval counter through the instrument cluster menu (service menu). If there is no such menu item, the reset is done with a scan tool.
  12. While you are at it, inspect the oil pan, seals, and oil system components for leaks. Also keep an eye on the oil level if the DPF regenerates often: some fuel can get into the oil pan and the level will rise. A level above normal or a fuel smell in the oil is a reason to have the engine diagnosed.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Never use oil without DPF approval (high-ash oil). Do not mix oils of different classes unless necessary. Dispose of used oil only at a proper collection point, and never pour it down a drain or onto the ground. If you have no experience working under a car, have a repair shop do the replacement.
