Heater Temperature Control Repair (Heater Valve Cable and Control Lever)
The VAZ-2107 (Lada Riva) has no blend door to mix hot and cold air, as newer models do. The temperature is set by a lever on the dash, which uses a cable to open and close the heater valve (the flow of coolant through the heater core). Typical faults: the cable is misaligned or has slipped off the valve lever, the sheath has come out of its retainer, the cable is seized or broken, the dash lever is broken, or the valve leaks or is stuck. Symptoms: the heater is always hot or always cold, the lever moves stiffly or too freely, or the temperature does not change.

Tools
6- Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers
- 8 mm and 10 mm wrenches
- pliers
- a container for coolant
- rags
- cable lubricant if needed
Step by step
11 steps- Stop the engine and let it cool down. Park the car on level ground with the parking brake applied.
- Diagnosis. Move the temperature lever and watch the valve in the engine compartment (on the firewall, on the right side in the direction of travel). If the valve lever does not move, check the cable and its mounting. If the valve lever moves but the temperature does not change, check the valve itself and whether the heater core heats up (both hoses should be hot when the valve is open).
- Inspect the cable attachment at the valve. It has two attachment points: the sheath is clamped in a retainer (a bracket or screw), and the cable itself is clamped by a screw on the valve lever. A common cause of control failure is that the sheath has come out of the retainer, the cable has slipped off, or the screw has loosened. If this is the cause, reposition and secure the cable as described in step 9.
- If the cable is seized, disconnect it from the valve lever and pull the sheath out of the retainer. Lubricate the inside of the sheath and check the cable's travel by hand. If it binds, is frayed or is broken, replace the cable.
- To replace the cable or the dash lever, remove the dashboard trim panels around the heating and ventilation control unit (the radio and trim panels come off with a screwdriver; they are held by screws and clips). The control unit has three levers (air distribution, temperature, air intake flap); the cable runs from the temperature lever to the valve.
- Free the control unit and disconnect the cable from the lever. Note the lever position (far left is cold, far right is hot) and how the sheath sits in its holder.
- Route the new cable along the original path through the firewall. Avoid sharp bends and kinks: the bend radius must be smooth, otherwise the lever will move stiffly.
- If the valve itself is faulty (leaking or stuck): drain some of the coolant (you will need a container), loosen the clamps on the two hoses, pull the hoses off the valve, and unbolt the valve from its mount. Install the new valve and tighten the clamps without excessive force (roughly 2-4 N·m (18-35 lb-in), so you do not tear the hoses). Top up the coolant to the proper level.
- Cable adjustment. Set the dash lever to the far "cold" position (left). Set the lever on the valve to the "closed" position, all the way. Secure the sheath in the retainer, pull the cable slightly taut, and tighten the screw of its clamp. Check: at the far "hot" position the valve must open fully, and at "cold" it must close fully. If it does not reach the end of its travel, shift the sheath or the cable in the clamp by 2-5 mm and check again.
- Reassemble the dash and trim in reverse order. Start the engine, warm it up to operating temperature, bleed out air pockets (squeeze the heater hoses and top up the system if necessary), and check heater operation at both extreme lever positions. Inspect the connections for leaks.
- If the dash lever moves freely and does not move the cable, the lever's pivot or plastic guide is broken. Replace the heating and ventilation control unit as an assembly, or look for a repair option (plastic levers do not repair well).
Common mistakes and warnings
- Work only on a cold engine: the coolant is hot and under pressure, and burns are possible
- Antifreeze is toxic and dangerous to animals, so clean up any spills
- After replacing the valve or hoses, be sure to check the coolant level and bleed the air from the system, otherwise the engine may overheat
- Exact tightening torques for the clamps and screws are not given in public sources, so tighten moderately, without stripping threads or damaging plastic parts
