Lada (VAZ) 2107 (Gen 1): Heater Valve Replacement
The VAZ-2107 heater valve is mounted on the heater supply line in the engine bay near the firewall and is operated by a cable from the lever on the dash panel. Typical signs of wear: coolant leaking at the valve body, wet carpet on the passenger side, or a heater that won't shut off or doesn't heat. The job is easiest on a cold engine, after relieving the pressure and draining some of the coolant.

Tools
8- Flat-head and Phillips screwdrivers
- 8 mm
- 10 mm and 13 mm wrenches
- pliers
- hose clamp pliers
- container for coolant (at least 6-7 L (1.6-1.8 gal))
- rags
- funnel
Step by step
13 steps- Park the car on level ground, shut off the engine and wait until it has cooled completely. Do not open the expansion tank cap on a hot engine: the coolant is under pressure and can cause burns.
- Move the heater control lever on the dash to the "warm" position (valve open). Open the hood and remove the expansion tank cap to relieve the pressure.
- Place the container under the car. To minimize coolant loss, open the drain plug on the cylinder block or disconnect the lower radiator hose and drain the coolant to a level below the valve. A full drain is not required, but some coolant will still leave the system.
- Locate the heater valve: it sits on the hoses running to the heater core near the firewall. Lay rags under the valve and loosen the clamps holding the hoses on the valve pipes.
- Pull the hoses off the valve pipes, twisting them around their axis. If a hose is stuck, do not yank it. Carefully cut it off with a knife so you don't damage the heater core pipes. Drain any remaining coolant into the container.
- Disconnect the valve control cable: loosen the cable sheath clamp screw and release the cable end from the valve lever. Note the position of the cable relative to the lever.
- Remove the valve mounting bolts or nuts (usually 2, 8-10 mm wrench) and take off the valve together with the old gasket. Wipe the mounting surface and check the pipes for corrosion and cracks.
- Install the new valve with a new gasket and tighten the fasteners evenly, without skewing and without force. The torque is low, about 3-5 N·m (2-4 lb-ft); go by the gasket sitting snugly. Overtightening cracks the plastic body or tears the gasket.
- Connect the control cable and adjust it: with the lever in the "cold" position the valve must close completely, and in the "warm" position it must open fully. Tighten the cable sheath clamp.
- Push the hoses onto the pipes, replacing worn clamps with new ones if needed, and tighten them so the hose does not spin and is not pinched.
- Close the drain plug or reconnect the lower radiator hose and fill coolant to the normal level through the expansion tank. Keep the heater lever in the "warm" position so air can escape from the heater core.
- Start the engine, warm it up to operating temperature, watch the level in the tank and top it up. Lift the heater hoses to push out any air pocket, and make sure the heater works and there are no leaks. Check that the valve shuts off with the lever in the "cold" position.
- After the engine has cooled, check the coolant level again and inspect the connections for leaks.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Work only on a cooled engine: antifreeze is toxic, and hot coolant under pressure causes burns
- Do not pour drained coolant on the ground
- Take it to a recycling point or reuse it if it is clean
- An air pocket in the system after the replacement is a common reason for the heater not heating and the engine overheating, so be sure to bleed the system and monitor the temperature during the first drives
