Lada Kalina 1.6 8V VAZ-11183 (2011): Air Filter Element Replacement

The air filter on the VAZ-11183 should be replaced about every 15,000 km (9,300 mi), and more often in dusty conditions. The element is flat and can be replaced without removing the housing. The mass airflow (MAF) sensor measures the intake air, so handle it carefully during replacement.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 10-15 minutes Steps: 9 Tools: Phillips and flat-blade screwdrivers (for the clamp or cover screws), dry rag

Part

  • 🔩 Air filter element for Kalina with the 1.6 8V engine (flat panel, rectangular). Genuine LADA and aftermarket Mann, Filtron, Nevsky Filter and BIG Filter parts fit

Step by step

9 steps
  1. Shut off the engine, let it cool and open the hood. The air filter housing is on the left side of the engine bay, as seen from the driver's seat. A duct runs from its cover to the throttle body.
  2. If a MAF sensor is installed on the cover, press the locking tab on the connector and unplug the sensor. Do not drop the sensor and do not touch its sensing element.
  3. If the duct clamp keeps you from lifting the cover, loosen the clamp and slide the duct off. If the cover can be folded back together with the duct, skip this step.
  4. Release the clips around the edge of the cover by prying each one with a flat-blade screwdriver. If the cover on your car is held by screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the cover and move it aside smoothly, without jerking, so you don't damage the corrugated duct or the wiring.
  5. Remove the old filter element. Note how it was seated: the sealing rim must sit in the seat of the housing.
  6. Wipe the inside of the housing and the cover with a dry rag. Make sure no debris falls into the intake tract. Inspect the duct for cracks and the rubber seals for damage.
  7. Install the new element so that it sits flat and the rim fits tightly all the way around. A crooked element lets unfiltered air leak in.
  8. Close the cover, snap all the clips into place (or tighten the screws without overtightening), tighten the duct clamp and plug in the MAF sensor connector until it clicks.
  9. Start the engine and check that the idle is smooth and the Check Engine light stays off. If the light comes on, check the MAF sensor connector and the duct fit.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not drive without a filter, and do not install "zero-resistance" filters with low filtration efficiency. Dust damages the MAF sensor and speeds up cylinder wear. Do not wash or blow out a paper element: dust clogs the pores and reduces its filtering ability. The exact locations of the cover fasteners and clamps may vary by trim level and model year, so inspect the housing first.
