Lada Niva Travel (1st generation): Cabin Air Filter Replacement and Air Duct Cleaning

On the Niva Travel, the cabin air filter is installed in the heater housing under the instrument panel, and it is accessed through the lower trim panels in the footwell, not from under the hood. Replace it once a year or every 10,000-15,000 km (6,000-9,000 mi), and more often if you drive on dusty roads. It is convenient to clean the air ducts and treat the system at the same time. The exact panel removal sequence depends on the trim level, so work carefully and do not force the clips.

Tools

  • Phillips and flat-blade screwdrivers
  • Torx bit set
  • plastic trim removal tools
  • vacuum cleaner with a narrow nozzle
  • soft brush
  • flashlight
  • antibacterial cleaner for A/C and ventilation systems (spray with a tube)
  • microfiber cloths

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface, shut off the engine, and remove the key. Set the heater fan to minimum and make sure it is off before you start work.
  2. Open the hood and clean the air intake area at the base of the windshield. Remove leaves, pine needles, and debris from the grille and the drain tray. A clogged tray causes dampness and odors in the cabin.
  3. Clear the driver and passenger footwell areas. Remove the lower plastic instrument panel trim on the side where the filter housing is located. To do this, remove the retaining screws and release the clips with a trim removal tool. If the glove box is in the way, remove it.
  4. Locate the filter compartment cover on the heater housing. Press the latches and carefully remove the cover. Note the filter's position: it has an arrow showing the airflow direction.
  5. Pull out the old filter without shaking it out inside the cabin. Inspect the compartment: remove leaves, dust, and any signs of mold with a vacuum cleaner and brush.
  6. Blow out and vacuum the accessible sections of the air ducts. Open the vents on the dashboard and insert the nozzle as far as it will reach. Clean the footwell and defroster vents the same way, as far as access allows.
  7. Treat the system with the antibacterial cleaner. Insert the spray tube into the filter compartment or the air intake, following the instructions on the can. Run the fan at medium speed and let the product work for the time specified. Do not treat the system with the A/C running unless the product allows it.
  8. Install the new filter with the arrow pointing in the direction of airflow, the same way the old one was installed. Make sure it sits flat and without skewing in the slots, otherwise unfiltered air will leak past it.
  9. Close the compartment cover and reinstall the trim panels and the glove box. Tighten all screws by hand without excessive force. The plastic strips easily, and tightening torques are not specified here.
  10. Start the engine and run the fan through all speeds. Check the airflow at all vents and make sure there is no whistling, unusual odor, or rattling.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not force the trim panels near the pedals and steering column: wiring harnesses run nearby, and on vehicles with airbags (they are fitted on updated versions) you must not touch the airbag connectors or harnesses
  • If a persistent damp smell remains in the cabin, check the drain of the tray under the windshield and repeat the treatment
  • Do not run the fan for long with the filter removed, since dust will get onto the evaporator and the heater motor
